Being off with sick child

Am dreadfully worried. DD has come down with chicken pox yesterday. I work part time. There is an important audit tomorrow morning at 10-1. I wont be able to be there. My mum has said she can have DD when she gets home from work, so ill be able to go in 2-5pm.
I normally work 5 hours, 4 days a week. So ill only be able to do 3, and will still have to miss the important audit.

I expect my employer is going to be majorly pissed off. WHat can i do?

Im hoping that going into work, on my not normal hours, ie. when my mum can have her, at least shows willing.

I also thought i could do this on what would be my day off.

Because im off on pre booked holiday next week and i was off week before last for 2 days with D&V.

But, nursery wont take her until shes scapped up, and shes still cropping new spots. So theres not a lot i can do.

Anything i can do to smooth it over? will my paltry efforts of going into work when i can make a difference, or should i just say, sod it, DD is my protiry and stay and look after her?

If there is no friend or DP you can ask then I think it has to be sod it and you have to stay and look after her. Chicken Pox is chicken pox and work have to understand there is nothing you can do about it.

right - hows this for a plan.

I dont go to work tomorrow and look after DD. Tuesday is my day off anyway. Tue pm i take DD up to her dads for him to look after her wed, thur, fri.
By then, 48hrs on, hopefully she will feel quite a bit better and he will be able to look after her and she will be ok with going.
Then i can work all day wed and friday to make up the hours missed from monday.

Hows that? If you were an employer would that be ok?

Most employers are genuine people. Ask them, tell them its a emergency.

Now I've employed people where an emergency like this happened every week, if your not one of them it should be ok.

sch From an employers perspective your plan sounds very reasonable. However I am not your employer and I don't know the significance of missing the audit to your employer.

On the legal side you are entitled to take the day off for emergency reasons.

I didnt make it into work. DD is really really ill.
There are just no options for me. All family work. Chilcare wont take her as she is ill. Shes so ill with it, she cant even walk, her feet are covered with pox. shes not eating or drinking. she cant even sit up without screaming in pain.

Her dad coiuld have her, but hes an hour away and i cant get her to him.

I decided to bit the bullet and call work with a heads up. That i did have a plan in place, but that it wasnt working as DD is that ill, but said that things could change and i would be in as soon as i can and that i was really sorry.

They said not to worry, that they would assume i woldnt be in the rest of the week, and if i was able to to let them know. I offered to go in for a few hours and get my mum to have DD here, but they said it wasnt worth it.
I said i was sorry as it was bad timing and im off next week and they said not to worry, they wouldnt go through it with me over the phone but we could talk about options when i get back.

Do they mean like unpaid? or holiday or what?

sch hey could mean they want to discuss unpaid/holiday with you, depends whether they have a family policy or stick with statutory.

They don't have to pay you for these days however some employers may choose to do so. Others may offer to let you use annual leave if you want to.

I hope DD is better today.

Try not to worry about work, I agree with GoEngland, they probably just want to make sure you are aware of what their policies are on emergency leave.

Most companies would expect you to take the time off unpaid, soome may let you use annual leave.

Either way it sounds like your company have been understanding, so try not to worry about it.
