Permanent or contract work?

I am in full time , permanent work for an IT company, office is 5 minutes away from work. I am able to drop my 5 year DS to school each morning. However, I am underpaid and have been asking for a payrise for over a year, and keep getting fobbed off - told to wait until next year, next head of dept, etc etc. I will not get a payrise where I am.

I could get contract work that would a) pay much more but b) would mean that I would have to leave home earlier and I wouldn't be able to drop DS to school each morning. I really don't know what to do.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom/avdice for me please?

Will the cost of childcare wipeout the increased wages and how secure/ongoing is the contract work? What about transport costs?
I would rather have job security and the time with dcs than more money.

Don't contract if you don't understand it. I am a contractor and I do get paid a lot more than perm employees. However i have no "employment rights" as I am employed by myself and all work I get is a business to business deal.

So you low salary starts to look good when you take into accounts sick pay, pension and holiday.
