Calling all criminal lawyers - getting back into the Crown Court after three years career break

Has anyone done this? Has anyone any advice?

I go back to work in six months and am already having nightmares about being chewed up by a vicious Crown Court judge. I can't even remember the law I used to know, never mind the new stuff.

I would welcome any advice. Just don't tell me my only option is to re read Archbold cover to cover.

Hi, i am a criminal lawyer currently off with first child and go back in January. Are you going back to your original job or new job and how did you manage to take 3 years off?

I wish i did have some great advice for you and if you do get any please let me know i feel like i have forgot it already and only been off since Feburary!!

It might be a good idea to explain to your new firm that you are going to be a bit rusty when you first start and maybe you could start with a few easy cases until you have time to get up to speed.

I do think though that it may be a case of getting the books out and just brushing up t get you going on the basics and then reading into the rest as your cases come up.

I am afraid there has also been quite a few changes to legal aid in criminal in the past few years with all the means testing in the mags and also the crown now and changes to the criinal LA contracts. I would probably ask your supervisor at your new job to brief you on this and how it affects the work you will be doing.

6 months is still quite a long time to go so i would definately not waste the rest of your lovely time off worrying about it.

Where abouts do live/ will be working?
