Calling teachers who know lots about maternity pay

mummynumnum · 22/05/2010 08:45

I normally get paid on the 25th of each month. I return to sch from mat leave on the 19th July just before we break up on the 21st. Am I correct in thinking that on the 25th July I get a full pay packet? I thought I did, but a teaching friend who goes back on the same day wasn't expecting to.

Why would you? If you've spent more than half of July on maternity leave and only from 19th 'back at work', then you'd be paid accordingly. In August you will be 'back at work' for the full month so will be paid as normal.

mummynumnum · 22/05/2010 09:04

See I was under impression that as soon as you went back to work you went back on full pay. With dd1 I went back mon be4 broke up for Xmas and sure got full pay packet. Not sure now. Phoned union and sure they said did but perhaps they misunderstood me. Bet the union are not open today to phone.

Well yes you will be on full pay as soon as you go back, absolutely. But you won't have been on full pay for all of July, because you won't have been back all of July, so obviously your July pay packet will reflect that. You will be on full pay from 19 July, so will get whatever maternity pay (if you are still getting any) you are due for 1 - 18th July, and will get full pay from 19 - 31 July. In August you will get full pay for the entire month.

mummynumnum · 22/05/2010 09:14

So on the 25th July, I will get 13 days full pay for 19th-31st July and mat pay for 1st to the 18th????

The unions explanation when I phoned them was v poor then!!! Oh dear, will have to have a re-think.

Yes, mat pay for the days you are on mat leave, full pay for the days you are back at work.

Bonsoir · 22/05/2010 09:19

Does anyone else find this OP slightly worrying? A teacher who cannot understand how salary and payments thereof work...

Pozzled · 22/05/2010 09:23

Yes, it's just as flowerybeanbag describes. Your first full pay packet will be August when you've 'worked' a full month.

mummynumnum · 22/05/2010 09:24

Why is it worrying? I have not read something correctly and got my wires crossed with union. I am sorting out going back to work at the mo and want to get date right and do what is best for my family and my finances.

I do feel a bit of a dumb blonde now bonsoir but I assure you I am not!!! Tee hee!

Sadly, my silliness in getting this wrong means I may have to bring my return date forward and I will have less time with my ds-boo!

School are now expecting me back on the 19th but if I wanted to return the week earlier due to what I realised thanks to the posts above, have I got time sufficient notice time to request this from the school or is it too late to change my return date.

In some ways I think I liaised with sch to early re goin back and when i was too tired to think clearly.

Will phone union tomorrow but just rolling it around in my brain today and wondered I anyone knew.

Aw, don't feel bad, it is confusing and unions don't always help explain things.

As other people have said you'll only get full pay from when you actually return to work (this could include holiday days if you first day of your return to work was a bank holiday/half-term or whatever).

I've just googled it as I can't remember what I did when I went back to teaching after mat leave and you have to give 21 days notice of changing your return to work date. More info here. But, if you call your head then they might let you change your start date if they have work for you to do - you know your head, would they be amenable to this?

leeloo1 · 23/05/2010 13:18

I'd also say that for an extra week or so's wages is it really worth the extra stress of trying to change your back-to-work date? I know money is important, but could you just grin and bear it and enjoy the extra week with your baby?

llareggub · 23/05/2010 13:19

Don't call the union, call your HR or payroll team at the council.

mummynumnum · 23/05/2010 13:54

I don't really want to go back and when spoke to union I said if I go back on 19th July will I get full mth in July. They said yes. Obv they got it wrong and I went with them and obv not the case. June is a stretch to cover bills but really don't know if will make it through July without bringing return date earlier. Sort of worth it financially, but then not as have to but ds in nursery just for one week. He is also ebf and had no joy with a bottle. Now at a push mil would loan it us but hate having to do this and don't know how we would re pay. Mortgage co won't give us a repayment holiday, used savings and have sold everything we can on eBay!!! Got it is hard.

leeloo1 · 23/05/2010 20:45

Oh no, you poor things. Well, talk to your school's HR place then, as maybe union is right? although pretty sure when I went back I only got a bit of full pay for 1st month.

If you put your DS into nursery then, then wouldn't you have to pay for the whole summer holidays, not just for that 1 week? If so it'd negate any savings, unless perhaps your DH or family could take time off to look after him (and maybe bring him to see you at lunchtime for feed?).

Good luck with it all - such a stressful time.

mummynumnum · 23/05/2010 21:29

Yeah, would have to pay all summer for him. Dh was going to have 19th to 21st off to have him but can't have week before as also needs parental leave for dd on sept as she starts school. We did so well
saving but just never goes that far. Will
check with payroll but think everyone is right. I am eyeing up my husbands car-could sell that....

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 25/05/2010 08:35

leeloo1-Thanks for the thoughts. Payroll or sch not got back to me yet, but have applied to do some exam marking so if get approved that may generate some extra cash.
