If I get a 2nd job do I have to/should I tell my current employer?

Title says it all really. I currently work 15 hours per week for my employer, split over 3 short days. I have been offered another job 8 hours per week which is a working from home job and will fit in where-ever it can.

Do I have to tell my current employer/Should I tell my current employer?

Eddas all play groups have an obligation to have an 'emergency' space or two available each day. Specifically for local authority emergency cases but can be used for other 'emergencies'.

And you will find that termly changes take up a lot more time to admin than you realise when parents constantly change their minds, even half way through a term

Not trying to put you off, just hoping you realise exactly what you are taking on.

I wish you good luck with it all.
Best wishes
Gilly

Eddas · 16/05/2010 14:58

I really appreciate all your comments gilly, giving me things to think about and ask the current admin lady I will send her an extensive email to check everything out. I'm sure she'll love that!!

We are allowed 30 children per session but only give out 26 places (max) as that's enough in our hall, so we do have emergency spaces should we need them.

I see what you mean about people changing their minds, but people can't up sessions as there's no space at the moment. I know things will change alot as that's the nature of pre-schools. But unless someone wants to stop coming all I could say to them is no at the moment!!

We have just recently had to look at our admissions poilcy as we had too many children and no way to fit them all in, I was involved in making the policy as I am trustee at the moment, so I know how tricky it can be.

As I said, if I find it all too much I will just give notice. But I would like to try, if my boss allows it.

We really are stuggling and the money will be just what we need. My house is already full of papers so a few more won't make much difference It will just allow me to buy lots of storage

Hi just wanted to inform you of my experience of having two jobs. I have had my 2nd job for over three years and only now has the first job asked for confirmation of my secondary employment. This came up in a review and there was a hidden agenda. I had invoked the flexible working request to cut my hours on the first job before I took on 2nd job. By the time I took on 2nd job this was established and 2nd job did not encroach on my old work pattern.

Fast forward three years and suddenly subject crops up and the first job want to know where I work. when work, hours of work and how long I have worked there. This was a co-incidence as I then had an email about review of my current employmebt. I asked why they wanted to know as I have never hidden the fact I have 2 jobs and there is no conflict of interests. They said it was for personnel file. I know now it was be because of upcoming review!
My point is employers only interested if they have a vested interest and if I had option I wouldn't mention it to them. HTH

thanks missundertood. Good to hear from someone whose been there.

I tried to get to look at my contract today but it's a bit tricky. It's kept in an office where lots of people go in and out alot so hard to get to look without someone seeing and questioning. Any ideas for why I would need to look at it without divulging the real reason?

LadyInMauve · 18/05/2010 17:21

eddas - you should have your own copy of your contract. If you have mislaid it ask your HR dept to let you have a copy. They should not think anything of it, you should have had a copy anyway.

The only reason you need to give is that you have lost your copy.

Eddas · 18/05/2010 17:35

i'll have a look but I'm not sure I have one. we don't have an HR dept, very small employer I would have to ask my boss

OP posts:
LadyInMauve · 18/05/2010 17:51

Just ask for a copy in a casual way - say can't find your copy. Don't offer any explanation, not really their business. If they are rude enough to insist, just say you want it for your records, and than say no more.

I know what you mean about small emloyers, but if you are just casual and don't make a big deal about it I doubt they will give you any trouble.

Are you sure you have actually signed a contract? I know your employers are a firm of accountants but IME they can be the worst for keeping their own personnel matters straight.

Eddas · 18/05/2010 18:03

I have a tendancy to look guilty

I did sign a new contract when I went part time so i'm sure I have one. IKWYM thought about them being bad at things!

Eddas, just to add something else for you to think about, you will probably need to step down from being a trustee because (at least here in Scotland) trustees are not allowed to benefit financially. That's presuming the pre-school is a charity - being a parent of teenagers, I don't know how these things work.

victoriah3 · 19/05/2010 08:19

You need to ensure that you are not receving a tax free allowance in both jobs. This happened to a friend of mine and was landed with a hefty bill at the end of the tax year. If all your allowance is used up in the main job you must opay basic rate tax on the second. that is 20 % of the whole sum. Hope this makes sense

LadyInMauve · 19/05/2010 08:34

Victoria, eddas works as an accountant, she has this covered. She just needs to make sure she is on code BR for second job. As it is a small organisation she will probably be preparing the payroll herself!

Oblomov · 19/05/2010 08:48

Just to give an alternative. A positive one. I have a p/t job. Accounts. Was advertised as these hours and nothing to do with flexible request. Fab job. Took another p/t job. 2nd accounts job finished. Like Op, I am very very organised. I never let anyone encroasch on my free time. But in the few times, i have stayed to finish something important, becasue I WANT TO, my boss appreciates. No filing or papers at home for me !!
Not every 2nd job experience is negative. Mine was fab. ANd I was paid spond-oolies. Fabarooney.

Eddas · 19/05/2010 10:02

Yep i'll be doing the payroll for teh pre-school and I know all about PAYE codes so should be fine.

I've just found my contract on our staff file so have printed it off to look at when I get home. I don't think it says anything about a 2nd job so I shall probably keep schtum and will plead ignorance if anything should every come up about it

Thanks for all the advice everyone

oblomov, lovely to hear a positive story, was beginning to think it'd be hell having 2 jobs

OP posts:
Eddas · 19/05/2010 13:48

right, i've had a chance to look at my contract and it states

'you shall devote the whole of your time and attention to the firm's business and you shall not without the prior written consent of the firm be engaged or concerned in any other trade, business or occupation. If you are invited or induced to become engaged in any other trade, business or occupation by a third party, you shall promptly disclose that fact to the office partner, together with details of the third party, the nature of th trade, business or occupation and the invitation made or the inducement offered.

I think that makes it pretty clear that I SHOULD tell/ask my boss. But because I am part-time(just part-time not because of any flexible working request) I would expect him to be ok with it.

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 19/05/2010 13:52

"you shall devote the whole of your time and attention to the firm's business"

Good grief, woe betide anyone who has a life outside work! I'm sure/hope they mean the whole of your time and attention during your contracted hours... In other words don't spend your days MNing on their time.

But yes, sounds like you need to let your boss know.

Eddas · 19/05/2010 13:55

I thought that too, but it doesn't say so, I copied it work for word from the contract!

OP posts:
onadietcokebreak · 19/05/2010 20:13

Eddas...just looked at thread to see if I could add anything but seems its all been covered.

Would also like to says thanks again for the sun holiday code you gave me ages ago...we go at the end of month and I cant wait!

Good luck wuth your boss and new job x

LadyInMauve · 19/05/2010 22:49

Heck, that's a pretty heavy clause

It seems to say that you cannot do any other job at all, not just that you have to get permission.

Can that really be a fair contract term?

Eddas · 20/05/2010 12:22

I think it may be refering to full timers really. Basically they don't wnat us taking on private work(I think)

I have just asked my boss and he said as I only work part time for him he has no problem at all and was pleased that i'll get a bit of extra money

I'm pleased that I know him well enough to know his repsonse

Now I'd best get my butt off mn and start devoting the whole of my time and attention to the firm's business

OP posts:
LadyInMauve · 20/05/2010 16:20

Still a pretty onerous obligation on full timers - sounds more like a slavery contract!

Glad you have a reasonable boss who didn't decide to enforce this clause.
