Impact of flexible working on salary query

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone can help me. I have been on maternity leave since February and am planning to go back to work in September. I would like to go from working full time to 2.5 days a week and understand therefore that I need to put in a request for flexible working. I am under the impression that my employer will be ok with this but just want to check what impact this has on my salary - am I entitled to keep my current pay but just at a reduced hourly rate?

Also if my employer needs to create a new job role for me to accommodate the reduced number of hours would they have to keep my pay in line with what it was before or can they get away with cutting it as it would be a different role?

Just want to make sure I've got all my facts straight. Thanks v much.

I'm back at work in June and have gone from full-time to 3 days a week. I have kept my same job and we do it as a job share with another part-timer doing the other 2 days of the week. My wage is the same as before but calculated on a pro rata basis and the same goes for holiday. That's how it should be done.

I'm not sure about your second question though.

You salary will be pro-rated (half your current salary if your job is normally 5 days) if you can stay in the same job.

If they agree to create a new role (and this is at the extreme end of agreeing flexible working requests, you do know that?), the pay scale can be whatever is appropriate for that role. The only rule is that they can't pay part timers a lower hourly rate than they would full timers in the same job, just reduce the salary for the reduced hours. If moving to 2.5 days meaning dropping seniority/responsibilities, you could have the double whammy of a lower salary, then reduced to 2.5/5 for your working hours.

Thanks guys, that's really clarified things for me. Hopefully the boss will agree to me keeping the same role but just at fewer hours. Though I guess you can never be sure until you have the conversation, so best be prepared! Cheers
