Should i tell my employer?

Hi i just need a bit of advise really. Im currently in a new role as a duty manager im training at the moment and finding it reallty diffucult. the problem is im really struggling to seperate my work/home life. Ive got problems at home, my mum is not well at the moment nothing serious i hope, shes waiting for the results still but she has been seriously ill in the past so obviously im worried. Im struggling to cope at work because of this. Should i speak to my manager about it i feel a bit silly if i do because there may be nothing wrong (hopefully)

I would. It will help them to be more sympathetic to your situation.

Please do speak with your manager. I'm a senior manager and find it much easier to deal with anyone who's not 100% with it if I know what's going on.

Very often just being able to talk about their worries helps them to draw a line under it at work IYKWIM.

Hope all goes well with your mum.

What happens if there not sympathetic they might think that if i cant deal with problems at home then maybe im not suitable to be a manager.

im really worried that my manager might think i cant cope under pressure, im worried about talking to her because she might think im over reacting with the situation with my mum, she doesnt know that my mum has been ill in the past i was in another job then

Well I suppose it depends on how long it takes for the results to come through. However put it this way. You say your not coping and struggling with you work/home life. Now if you don't tell them they are going to think this is normal and wonder if they made the right decision employing you. If you tell them at least they have a chance to put a reason to how you are at work. If they are not sympathetic....well at least you tried. I can't see that you have anything to loose really.

As an employer I would prefer to know as then I would be able to asses your performance with this in mind and possibly adjust my expectations. I would also be able to offer support if or when necessary.
