what kind of manager are you? Are a a friend to all?
Strict?
Strict to the point of being scary?

I'd be interested to know as I have just atekn over a team with a lot of problems and need to make up my mind what stance to take.

Well done you for sticking with your ideas & trying to motivate the team.
My dp works for Inland Revenue & from what I hear morale about the jobs cuts is pretty low.
I would imagine the whinging was inevitable.

Keep asking them for their ideas & opinions and being straight with them & you should win out in the end.
Good luck

I was approachable but proffessional.

Was always there should they need to talk etc but also asll the staff knew my position and respected that, please dont be overly friendly though as some may abuse you

I was a manager to a small dept and I try to re-create the manager/staff memeber relationship that I had before I was promoted. And thankfully for me it worked well. I tried to be a friend who demanded respect and I think I achieved that very well. One thing I really wanted to do was to not ask any member of my staff to do something that I myself was not willing to do. It probably made my job a lot harder to begin with as I was running myself ragged doing twice as much work but my I believe my staff respected me a lot more, thus making my managerial role a lot easier. Good luck
