SAHM to WOHM - did you change career

I just need a bit of inspiration. DD goes to school this year and DS will be following behind in 2 years so my attention is starting to turn to returning to work. Pre children I worked in a science based career, have a degree and spent 4 years training for the job and have only ever worked in that area. I don't know if I want to or can get back into my old area of work so need to consider retraining. I have some vague ideas but would like to know if other people have done it. What were you before and what did you become?

hi! i know how you feel... i didnt want to go back to what I did before. So I took a complete career change, joined Neals yard organic as work from hope opportunity and am training to be an aromatherapist!!! So different to the 9-5 rat race I was used to before....

hi, my story is very similar to organicmummi above . Ds just started school and I realised the school run wouldn't work well with a commute to the City. So I left my job at an investment bank (I'm an accountant) and set up my own business selling Usborne Childrens Books. I am learning marketing, selling, creativity! All new skills and I still get to take ds to school and pick up. My old job wasn't very sociable - this one is! It does depend on whether you need a steady income or whether your return to work is for you! I couldn't do nothing! let us know what you decide.

Yes, I did eventually. Went back to my original (very 'high power') career after DC1 was born. Left and became a SAHM. After a couple of years decided to retrain in a more caring profession working with young people. Flexible working / job shares much more the norm, too, so I am not looked upon as a freak for wanting to spend some time with my family and have a career.

Best decision I ever made. My life is so much more enjoyable now.

Remember, a huge chunk of the skills and experience you have are transferable!

Feelingsensitive · 29/03/2010 14:36

Thanks all.

MrsVidic - Whats a CSI?

Minnie Malone - Do you mind me asking what you did? I am looking at similar career routes now and have been thinking of being a Speech and language therapist.

Oh I should have known that. I watch that all the time. I dont think I could stomach it and have a feeling its a whole lot duller than it appears.

what's it like selling Usborne children's books? I like the idea of it as I am very passionate about books. I would like to hear about your experiences if you don't mind sharing them with me.
