It was a really interesting thread - and really helpful for me, so I thought I'd update you (if you're interested) and perhaps kick start another more general discussion about things academic.

so update: I spoke to the HOD - talked mainly about the content of the job but ended with a wee discussion re flexibility/wfh. he didn't recoil in horror, and implied there was scope for negotiation. As I mentioned before, I know the guy and have worked with him a bit, and some time after this discussion I got an email from him reminding me about the deadline. I can't help but see that as perhaps an indication that he'd like me to apply. (I actually already had done).

and point for dicussion: in the last few weeks I've seen 3 academic jobs (inc. the one I've applied for) advertised that are research posts - all with a cross over with the relevant industry. They are posts that would work with clients outside pure academia in a consultancy role. Give the current climate would i be right in thinking this is perhaps unis chasing new avenues for funding/money - is this a new trend? anyone else seen it and think it might grow? (am very excited if you think yes as it's perfect for me. in fact almost unbearably perfect...can't remember the last time I wanted a job so much)
