Sorry have to get this off my chest

Im having problems with someone at work and its really starting to annoy me now.

Basically what it is about a year ago i was given promotion to duty manager, i was shocked at the time because i really wasnt expecting it. When i was given the promotion my manager told me that she was thiking of giving the promotion to Emma but because she was going on maternity and that the business would change so much in the year she was off that she wanted me to do it.

Anyway Emma has now returned from maternity and to begin with things were fine i got on well with her and i felt that there was no jealousy that i had the promotion. Well recently thats all changed she wont listen to me, she makes out i dont know what im doing and if i ask her to do something she does the complete opposite.

Im finding things really difficult and i feel really useless. I just feel like im second best all the time. I dont know what to do im really struggling at the moment

Sounds tough.

When you say recently, how recently? Did something else change about that time?

Do you think 'emma' was told she was being considered for the promotion.

I think your boss has acted very badly - goodness knows if its legal - sounds very dubious to me not to promote someone because they're pregnant.

I suspect 'emma' has issues with your boss and is just taking it out on you.

Can you talk to your boss about the problems you're experiencing.

Tracey - no she wasnt told she might be considered for the promotion it happened after she went on maternity but she will probably think if she didnt go on maternity then she would of had promotion.

Ive spoken to my manager about her been awkward but i dont think she understands how hard im finding things

To be fair, Emma is right to think that if she hadn't gone on maternity leave she would have at least been considered for the promotion, because that's what your boss said to you.

If I'm perfectly honest I would say that Emma has a case for sex discrimination against your boss. Did you tell people at work about this? I think I might go and ask someone in HR, or talk to the ACAS helpline if you don't have an HR dept, about whether Emma might have a case, and what your responsibilities would be.

In the meantime, you are the manager, and you need to manage this situation. How is Emma's behaviour affecting team performance? It sounds as if you need to have a think about turning things around, and call her in for a meeting to find out what's on her mind and how she feels she is performing.

Yeah I can understand how emma is feeling but there's no need to take it out on me. Maybe emma was asked if she wanted the promotion, my manager never told me that she offered it to her first but maybe she didn't want to because I would feel second best
