I am a SAHM to 3 girls aged 8,7 and 3. I always wanted to be at home while they were small and have loved being able to do this. However the plan was I would return to work once they are all at school and that time is coming round.

I didn't enjoy what I was doing before (insurance) and want to re-train in something new. I want to be a speech therapist and this involves either a 4-year degree course or a 2 year Masters (I have a degree already, however the Masters is v tough and intense).

If I started next year, the girls would be 10, 8 and 4. I would need either an au pair or nanny (or something in between) to collect them from school on some days and ferry them to activities depending on what time I got home. Financially we are lucky enough to be able to afford it but I suppose what I am worried about is going from being a full-time SAHM to a mum who isn't around much in the week. Dh is v supportive - he says it wouldn't be forever and we are looking at 4 years max of study before I can work. I intend to work p/t once I qualify or as soon as I can.

Has anyone done something similar? How did you find it? I am well aware that it's going to be tough. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

Have you looked at maybe doing your course with the OU? It would be more flexible and would ease you in gently. Even if you just did the first year part time and then transfer the credits to a r/l university. Good luck.
