I informally arranged with my boss about doing some keep in touch days.

Do they have to pay you? I thought they did but then afterwards he mentioned that I wouldnt receive extra pay for them.

My employer pays your usual rate for back to work days, think you can have 10 back to work days without it effecting your maternity pay. Not sure if this is the same with every employer though.

I read that on direct Gov the other day. I was surprised because I thought it was 4

As far as I'm aware I'm entitled to be paid for KIT days

Yes they should pay you for the full day - even if you work less than a full day as they can't be split.

You can take a maximum of ten during your maternity leave.

However, there is no obligation for your employer to offer them. Although if you were exluded from training and briefings because you were on mat leave and a kit day could have been used that is arguably sex discrimination.

They don't have to pay you. They can pay you for 10 days without you losing any SMP. How much you get paid is negotiated between you and your employer. Most employers top up SMP to normal salary rate although if someone's only popping in for an hour meeting obviously that might be different.

You don't have to work KIT days, so if they are not prepared to pay you for them even though they can do so, I'd suggest you refuse.

Thanks everyone for your responses.
Our company was bought by another one a few years back and I was only going to use up the KIT days so I could get myself trained up on the other companies till process so that I could benefit from getting overtime at another shop!
I might do a couple of days just to see what its like working there but not the full 10 days.
