do you have to continue to pay an employee who has been called for jury service especially if you have to then pay someone else to replace them for that period?

i think the court pays them. i did jury service years agoand seem to remember getting work to fill in a form re my earnings, can't remember if they got the money back or if it was paid to me by the court instead of wages

I have just been called for jury service in 3 weeks time. Am starting a new contract in one week so it is not good timing but doubt whether I will be able to get out of it.

They reimburse earnings up to £63.12 per day which is less than half that I will earn at work and will leave me with about £30pd after paying childcare.

I don't think employers are obliged to pay an employer but certainly most big companies do. My dh was paid in full when he was on jury duty last year

You don't have to pay, but as Nulgirl says, the court payments don't cover a lot of people's salary. A lot of employers do pay, or make the salary up to full level. Be careful if you do this that your initial promise is for the two weeks of normal jury service though. You don't want to make an open ended promise and then find that they're stuck on a fraud trial...

i did jury service last May and i found that i ended up being able to go into work about half the time as they don't need you. My work didn't pay for the time i was off and i earned more than the maximum of £60 per day they paid so i lost out a bit money wise. I had legal cover on the house insurance and it covers jury service but i think that is only after about 3 days so as i only had 5 full days off it wasn't worth claiming. If trial is for more than 2 weeks then the maximum that the court pays goes up from the 3rd week onwards so is more likely to cover salary
