Some of you may know that I had a rather traumatic birth and post natal period with ds2
I am currently taking legal action against the NHS Trust (who I also work for) although no one knows about it.
I have been diagnosed with PTSD and an awaiting CBT.
Occuptaional Health have recommended I do not return to my role in a theatre environment as I cannot even watch an op on tv at the moment never mind in real life.

My boss phoned today, and he is fab, I told him what occ health had said and he said he would ring HR and the directorate manager for advice.
He rang me back then and said we need to start looking for new posts within the trust and possible redeployment.

I am now terrified that I wont get another job, although my PTSD would not affect me in any other area, and the Consultant believes that after treatment I may be able to return to theatre. They can terminate my contract if im not redeployed within 3 months.
I now feel like I should have just shut up and gone back to it and tried to manage instead of making a fuss

Of course you should not have shut up - what an awful situation to be in.

Are there any other options? NHS trusts now routinely offer career breaks. If there is a chance you will be able to go back to theatre would it be worth asking for a break untill you can see if the CBT works? Do you want to think about going back to theatre or would you be happy with a redeployment?

What about having a face to face meeting with your boss and HR to discuss options?

I cannot afford to take a career break, I need to go back to work by the end of May at the latest.

I am having a meeting with HR and my manager next week.

I am thinking of suggesting:

  • that I extend my mat leave by a few weeks so I go back after schhol holidays 1st wk of June, this takes me up to 36 wks and am allowed 39 wks
  • that gives me more time for treatment, as have just found someone privately who can see me in 4 weeks rather than waiting 4 months on the NHS
  • it also gives me time to see how I feel about returning to the theatre environment, and more time to find another job

Does this sound reasonable

Always a good idea to suggest different options - I think it's probably easier for them to terminate the contract of someone who is just completely intransigent and says 'no, i'm not going to do this, you need to find me something else'. But if you show willing and suggest various options that would help you return to work then no one can really accuse you of that.

Remember, your health def comes first tho and don't be pressured into anything. Good luck with the meeting next week

thanks

I am looking forward to returning to work on a personal level, just not to a theatre environment. I think I could cope with anything else, but I have seen enough guts and insides of theatres to last me a lifetime

Can Occ Health not arrange a fast track referral for CBT, as that would make sense in helping you and it would help them. Not all trusts do it but I've worked in ones before where there were fast track physio to facilitate return to work.

Just read your post. I hope it all works out for you.

Just thought it might help you to know that when I worked in HR in the NHS provided the person on redeployment worked with us and was happy to compromise we always found them something. The limited time period was mainly used for those who just wouldn't help themselves eg not turning up to informal chats with potential new managers etc!

I'd also agree with Kammy and meet with your manger and HR if you haven't already done so - and be pro-active e.g. check the jobs available in the trust and suggest suitable ones or just give your contact person a call every week to check progress.

All the best and good luck for the future
