Have I been charged correctly for CRB Check

I have applied for job working with the elderly in a care home.
The employer has charged me £57 for a CRB Check plus Pova check.
They explained that around £10 of it is for the Pova.
On checking the CRB Website it states the cost of an enhanced check as been £36.
I am quite confused there is no mention on their website about Pova but on googling another website mentiones that the CRB normally carry out a Pova at no extra charge alongside of the CRB Check.
I am concerned that I have been overcharged but don,t want to rock the boat.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the cost have I been charged correctly or not.
It just seems extremely costly and a few people have commented that there is no way they would have paid this amount out on a minimum wage job especially bank work where I dont know exactly how much work I will get.

I didn't realise that employees did ever get charged for a crb - I have applied to be an invigilator and the school is paying for the check (or at least there has been no mention of me paying for it).

Yes unfortunately and I suspect that the small independant care homes are the worst ones for this.
I suppose big firms that are generating lots of money and firms with a big string of businesses across the country do pay for them.
What the care home told me was that the owner did pay for them at one stage but then people where not taking the job after and that the home was losing too much money on these time wasters, so now they make prospective employees pay for it.

I suppose that does make sense but it's not very fair on prospective employees. Not sure about the cost of it though.

Found this on the crb website which suggests there is a cost (£6) to the pova part and that enhanced crb is £36. So youbdo seem to be being overcharged.

well stupid me paid it as I am sure it will be worth it in the long run.
Its just a bit of extra money to go along with my main job.
I would hate to think I have been overcharged its not easy to approach them about it really don,t want to set off on the wrong foot.
I have sent an email to the CRB asking them so it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

Had a bit more of a look and it appears there are admin charges

How much does it cost?

The cost of the checks vary:

A standard disclosure from the CRB currently costs £31.00. This is due to be cut to £26.00 on 1 October 2009.
An enhanced disclosure from the CRB will cost £36.00
If you are a volunteer then your check is free.
However, on top of these charges you will pay administration fees which will vary according to the different Registered Bodies, but are usually in the region of £20 plus VAT.

Found it here

It could be that they are using an agency to do the checks and passing the cost on to you. Is this a private care home?

JustAnotherManicMummy · 21/02/2010 12:54

Well if you've paid for it then you would own it I suppose.

Ask for full copies and a receipt "for my records".

That should make things a bit clearer.
