Being offered "extra" hours

Can I insist on being paid as a separate contract rather than just building up extra time off in lieu ? It is to cover work due to a vacancy (which is not planned to rerecruit yet) and sickness. Both postholders were paid more than me

Do you know what your contract says?

I work 22 hours a week, with the flexibility to work an extra 4 on busy periods. I don't get paid overtime or anything, but it is built into my contract for the extra time

If your contract says nothing about extra hours then how it works is between you and your employer to negotiate. They may only be prepared to offer time in lieu rather than extra payment, but if there's nothing in your contract saying you must work extra hours, you could always refuse to do the hours. Or you could say you are prepared to do it but would rather be paid overtime than accrue TOIL, and see what they say.

Thanks. Contract is fixed term with specified number of hours per week, so ,no, nothing about extra. Have given initial feedback that would want to be paid should I agree to the additional duties.
