Does anyone know if there are any guidelines on how much time off you're allowed with a poorly baby before you loose pay? I am allowed 5 sick days myself before loosing pay.

Hi,
I'm guessing you're up now with a sick baby as I am with my DD.

Let me check the rules on emergency parental leave.

I'll be back.

I guess a lot would depend on your organisation's policy on caring fro dependants.

Now, I am not advocating this in the least but I once took a sickie for myself to look after my sick DD but I couldn't afford to lose a day's pay.

Sorry you've got a poorly LO.

Up to 10 days paid leave for 'domestic emergencies' per annum is the norm.

I work for a small business and was discussing the subject with my boss and he said it would be at his discretion. I just wanted to check if there were any guidelines so thanks hf128219. DD only teething but has just had conjunctivitis for which I had a couple of days off. Hope yonibabe is better soon and thanks for your help

We have to take it as paid leave

I'm afraid that there is no right at all to be paid for absence due to a sick child. I actually wouldn't agree with hf128219 that 10 days paid is the 'norm'. Most organisations have pay at their total discretion, but a few very bit or public sector employers have a policy of the sort she describes. Small employers generally do not pay.

Also bear in mind that leave for care of dependants is to allow you to make other arrangments, not to take the full time off to care for your child yourself. So your boss could reasonably expect it to only be a day or two.

Sorry, it sucks, but tis the current law.
