Might be demoted following ML due to different terms -any help?

My ML is due to finish in the summer and I've been in to work to discuss what will happen when I go back. I have a senior position in a large national company. I am the most senior female in my region so no-one else to compare with. There are many more senior males. All at same level and above work full time.

I requested to go back (verbally) 4 days a week instead of 5 and was initially told this would be fine (verbally) subsequently I followed up request and proposed return date in writing at which point the senior management started to back track and said that if I wanted to come back 'part time' i'd have to relinquish my position. I have no way of knowing if anyone in any other office holds my position and works less than full time hours.

It's so frustrating as I've had to work damn hard to get to where I am and I'm good at my job (which 'they' always aknowledge) and I feel that this means I have no future with them as I'll never be re-promoted whilst working reduced hours.

I'm assuming I don't have a leg to stand on? Anyone any idea?

Many Thanks

I should add that I love my job and until now have really enjoyed working there.

I think that hey have to consider your request but if they feel that your job is not one that can be carried out on a part time basis that can decline the request, try and find an alternative at the same level or a lower position which suits you.

I know it must be hard but could your job be done in a 4 day week?

Thanks Tootles, Its feasible my job could be done in 4 days but I may offer to make myself available for urgent issues on my day off see if that makes any difference. I suspect it's a cost cutting exercise. They even joked at the meeting that they didn't think it would be a problem as they'd get 5 days work out of me in 4! So I know that it's not a confidence thing.

I'd have a chat with the HR department. If it's a national company the chances are they will be very careful when it comes to situations like this.

Also, is it worthwhile exploring other positions as well?
