Can your start date for maternity leave be AFTER your official due date?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I want to work (and be paid) for as long as possible, right up to the birth (or at least going into labour) if possible. My DD arrived two weeks after the official due date. I felt really well then and would have much rather had those two weeks added on to maternity leave with her, than be sitting twiddling my thumbs beforehand. I know there's no guarantee this one will also be late, but is there anything you can do about this? I suppose they know what your official due date is because they see your Mat B form or whatever it is? Thanks!

I don't think so...by the way it sounds like you are planning to labour in work??!!!

But I'm sure someone who knows for sure will be along in a minute!

No you have to start on your due date - I asked work last time as I had annual leave I wanted to take before starting maternity leave.

Yes you can start your maternity leave from the day your baby is born. However it must start then - you cannot take two weeks leave and then start maternity leave.

You can wait until the baby is born and start it then, however as your employer needs notification of the date you will be starting, you are relying on them being happy to leave the date open.

Ah, OK. So I'll see what they say about keeping it open. Thanks so much for that. I'm not planning to labour at work exactly (imagine - how on earth would I get access to all the drugs I need, which judging from the last effort will be a lot!), but in the weeks/days running up to the birth, I can work at home so it wouldn't matter if I went into labour whilst working, if you see what I mean!

I'm sure with DS1 I said my official maternity leave would start a week after my due date, bearing in mind that maternity leave would start on the day DS1 was born if he was born earlier. I just said I would use annual leave between my last day in the office and my maternity leave starting. They were fine with that, the most important thing to them was being able to plan around my last day in the office than when my maternity leave officially started.
