How do I pay tax?

I've done some work for a company and was told to make an invoice for hours done and they have sent a cheque for the total, with no pay slip or anything. I also work as a supply teacher for the council and a private school so get taxed for those as normal.
I rang the finance dept of the company and one woman just said she didn't know what I should do.
Is it my responsibility? Does anyone know what my best course of action in?

The work you have done is treated as self-employment earnings (schedule D) as you invoiced the company.

You need to contact your tax office (ask the payroll dept of one of your jobs for the number, your reference is your national insurance number which the payroll dept will also have if you have forgotten it). Tell them you have some self employment earnings in this tax year and they will arrange to send a tax return at the end of the tax year after 5th April. You need to fill this in and pay any tax due by 30th September if you let the tax office calculate the tax for you, which I would advise you to do if you do not have much experience of tax returns. Don't worry, the form will not be very complicated in your case and you should manage to do it yourself using the notes they send you.

You are welcome.

If you get stuck, post again. I'll keep a look out.
