Can anyone help me work out my pro rata holiday allowance please?

I've just started a new permanent job working 20 hours per week over 3 days (Weds, Thurs and Fri). The standard holiday entitlement for full time workers is 22 days (standard week is 39 hours) + the 8 bank holidays. Allowing for the fact that most bank holidays fall on on Monday how do I ensure I get a fair bank holiday entitlement.

Also, is it correct that my pro rata holiday allowance for holidays (not including BH) would be 22 days divided by 5 x 3 = 13.2 or do I need to take into account that their standard working week is almost double my working hours even though they are spread over 3 shorter working days? And would I round 13.2 days up to 13 and a half or round it down to 13?

Any advice gratefully received

Think of it in terms of total days including BH. Entitlement for employees working 5 days a week is 28 days. You work 3 days a week so should get a total of 28/5x3= 16.8 days, which should be rounded up to 17.

Obviously as that calculation includes BH you would be expected to take any BH that occur on your normal working days out of that total.

Hi Flowerybeanbag, their annual entitlement is 22 days + Bank holidays would that = 30 days, therefore 18 days in total for me with the understanding that if any BH fall on a Weds, Thurs or Fri then they come out of this allowance. Thanks for your help

Oh for crying out loud I can't even count!

Clearly 22+8 is 30, not 28.

So 30/5x3= 18 days in total.

x-post yes indeed it's 30 days, ignore my first post!

Thanks again Flowery, I've been trying to work this out for ages and you've explained it really simply.

Yes, what Flowery said!

You don't need to do anything complicated for the shorter days, just think in terms of days of holiday. The fact that a 'day' for you is roughly 7 hours and a 'day' for a full timer is closer to 8 doesn't make any difference. You both take a day of holiday and don't have to come to work that day.

You only need to get into complicated things with hours if they are very variable -e.g. you work a 2 hour shift one day and a 12 hour shift the next. Then it's easier to think in terms of a bank of x hours of holiday (or it would make sense to only take holiday on days you do long shifts!)

Hi

Sorry - just another quick question - I've just been informed that holiday allowance is actually 23 days + Bank holidays for FT, which equals 18.6 days for me on a pro rata basis. Is this figure rounded up to 19 days or down to 18.5?

TIA

I would round that up - I'd always round up to either 0.5 or the next whole day, as the idea is the part timer doesn't lose out. 0.6 is obviously only a tiny bit more than 0.5, but I'd still round up.

RibenaBerry · 21/01/2010 09:21

I'd round up too, for the reasons Flowery said, but people don't always. Depends how bothered you are!
