I realise the obvious-teaching, teaching assistant, school secretary but what else is there?

I know of a term-time PR manager

SecretSlattern · 10/01/2010 22:33

I work in pre-school but that is a bit close to your school type jobs so not much help!

FluffyForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/01/2010 22:33

School nurse (I am not, some only work term time though)

defineme · 10/01/2010 22:42

I'm a one-to-one tutor employed by a school.

My friend does term time only flexi for local council- her job is something to do with educational groups so maybe that's why it can be fitted in.

Don't forget about all the catering staff the schools need-my mum's friend is a cook for a special school and loves it.

If you work part time you do get to spend some of the holidays with your kids (if that's your issue) and most of my part time friends seem to work out the rest of the care between dps, gps, holiday clubs and reciprocal friend arrangements as well as your own holiday tme of course.

FlyMeToDunoon · 10/01/2010 22:42

ironlikealion PR is a bit out of my league but interesting that there is that option.
SecretSlattern yes actually had forgotten that type and nurseries.
FluffyForLifeNotJustForXma.... Do schools have nurses anymore? Are we talking secondary or private? Not that I have any kind of nursing or health qualification.

FlyMeToDunoon · 10/01/2010 22:45

Defineme do you work in a secondary school then?
Catering could be a possibility.
No GPS nearby and childcare seems scarily expensive.

If you're looking for flexible work you can fit around the children, as you want, when you want, i can help.

Let me know if you'd like info!

Part time office job (working for someone I knew before children so I said i could only do the job if it was term-time)! I also have a little sideline which is totally flexible - like WheresMy, let me know if you would like more info!

defineme · 11/01/2010 18:32

Yes I work in a secondary school, but one-to-one started in primary. You have to be a qualified teacher and it's tutoring Maths or English. The scheme should be starting in most schools this year, but there is some doubt about a Conservative government continuing it.

Many secondary schools now have cover officers who do all the cover lessons in school. Al the people I know doing this job were not teachers when they got it and most see it as a stepping stone to teacher training.

FlyMeToDunoon · 11/01/2010 19:56

Thanks for that. I am a qualified teacher but have not taught for 10 years now and would rather not go back into it right now.
WheresMyWaistGone and 2madboys what are your secrets? I don't have a car in case that is relevant.

Hi Fly. Sorry, I don't have CAT. I could email if you're happy to put your add up.

FlyMeToDunoon · 11/01/2010 21:07

2madboys I have found your posts about what you do but don't think it would be for me. Thanks anyway.

WheresMyWaistGone · 12/01/2010 07:51

Lecturing - holidays are much better as the college ones are one week longer?

That's what I do - it's great.

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 12/01/2010 08:01

If you used to be a teacher, then how about marking GCSEs etc? My friend does that. She also does exam invigilating for our local secondary school.

2madboys · 12/01/2010 13:48

No worries FlyMe.

Reallytired · 12/01/2010 21:36

Many local councils have flexible working policies, with options for term-time only, job-share etc. They may not be advertised as such, but it is worth enquiring if you like the look of a post. County councils and single-tier councils have education departments, which might be a good starting point. Or perhaps a road safety/cycling proficiency type job?

I have a jobshare (I applied with a colleague, with a proposal to show how it could work). Term time I work 3 short days a week, school holidays I work two long days. This reduces the amount of holiday care I need by one third.

FlyMeToDunoon · 12/01/2010 21:52

Thanks everyone these are great suggestions.
I have been doing some looking at the council vacancies and will investigate some of the other things.
