Any fellow teachers - can we have a day/morning off to go to a wedding?

Hello and Happy New Year,

I am a part-time Maths teacher at a state secondary school, just found out my Dad is getting married at end of Jan, on a weekday when I will be at work. (It is for practical purposes - he is working in Dubai and for his girlfriend to be able to live out there with him they need to be married.)

Its not a big wedding by any means - registry office, function room in pub etc but I would like to be there if I can.

As a teacher am I entitled to time off for a wedding? I am doubtful but my DH seems to think it must be possible. I know we can have a day off to move house and compassionate leave for funerals/etc but not sure about weddings?

Agree with popyscal. You can ask and it will be unpaid if they agree.

It completely depends on your head teacher. As Popsy says, you may be able to take it, but have to take it as unpaid leave so that the school can employ a supply teacher to cover you.

Generally it would be considered Ok, especially for a close family member.
Probably unpaid though.
DH has had a day off for his sister's wedding (he did get paid for the day though because they'd screwed him over his paternity leave earlier in the year)

Thanks for answering so quickly. Yes I thought it might be unpaid. Might be able to get away with just morning or afternoon off. Will speak to head next week.

I had to write a letter to the board of governors requesting a days unpaid leave to attend a siblings wedding. The general view was that they say yes to funerals so should for weddings of close family, and they did.

Thanks everyone. I emailed my head explaining situation - I'm part-time and have attended one PD day and one parents evening this academic year on days when I don't work - so he has agreed to a day's leave paid, which is great.

That's good news kimlouiseb. Your Head sounds very reasonable.
