What area of law do you do and how qualified are you? AFAIK not much recruitment for permanent jobs a the moment but a bit of potential locum work and some interesting spin offs - coroner etc.

mazzap · 14/12/2009 12:03

Ahh Thanks Chocolaterabbit, I qualified in 2000, and only did a couple of months in med neg cos i had a relapse of my MS which i had only just been diagnosed. I got a job as a legal adviser in Magistrates courts for 4 years then went away for 3 years with hubby. so area i would be most up on would be crime but i am not police station acreditted and that is what all the jobs want. Locum work would be great if i could get it

Hi - I have been searching threads about finding legal work. I have 2 questions regarding this thread which I would be grateful if someone could answer:

How do you find vacancies with a coroners office?

What is a legal adviser in a magistrates court? How do you find out about magistrates court vacancies? Are they all advertised on
www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk as there do not seem to be that many on there?

Many thanks.

Evening, I would contact your local law society and see if they have a vacancies board on their website and / or a vacancies listing in their paper bulletin & advertise yourself in there. Just a start!

BellsaRinging · 07/01/2010 20:51

Law society gazette or legal recruitment agencies?

stressed2007 · 08/01/2010 08:28

Thanks for the replies

"Law society gazette or legal recruitment agencies?"

I am sure they don't advertise these sorts of less run of the mill jobs

"would contact your local law society and see if they have a vacancies board on their website and / or a vacancies listing in their paper bulletin & advertise yourself in there. Just a start! "

What is a "local law society?" Do you mean the law society in which case their bulletin is the Gazette unless I am missing something?

I think being a clerk to the magistrates would be an interesting job, actually. The magistrates are not legally qualified so the clerk's role is to advise them on the law relevant to the case they are hearing.

As well as the Law Society of England and Wales, each area has a local law society. So we have the City of London Law Society for example, and the City of Westminster Law Society. Each of these elects a Council Member or members to the Law Society itself.

Stressed, I wonder if you need to pick up the phone to the law society in Chancery Lane? They will tell you how to get in touch with the law society near you. They might also know more about where magistrates' clerks jobs are advertised, or at least how to find out about them.

Thanks for the explanation - 12 years in the law and I never knew that. May explain why I can't get a job!

Thanks very much will follow this up.

Marginally related, but I noticed in this morning's PLC Financial Services newsletter this morning that they are advertising for an additional editor - it's a maternity cover role according to the website. Might be a good opportunity for someone looking for more regular hours?

Try www.totallylegal.co.uk or www.thelawyer.com
As recruitment consultants go, Chadwick Nott are very good.

Hiya
I have a 2:1 in European Politics from Nottingham Uni (2005) and did the GDL (2006) and LPC (2008).

Can't find any kind of training contract - had recent interviews with Thompsons and BarCap, both of whom withdrew the 2010 Sept training contracts for 'business reasons'. Im in London and want a f/t 2010 job,

anyone know of any?

I have 3yrs paralegal/ PA exp within magic circle/ top 10.

Thanks!

Roxy you need to make targeted, speculative applications for a TC to smaller firms who rely on recruiting people who have done all the qualifications and haven't secured a TC elsewhere. That's how I got mine (but in the sticks, not London). Don't worry about whether their website says they are recruiting or not - if they're registered as training firms (and this info is on the firm's entry on the Law Society website) they are worth a letter with a CV.

legalalien · 18/01/2010 13:32

There's potential for this thread to turn into a recruitment site!

If anyone is looking for a general commercial lawyer role (various contracts with suppliers and consumers), probably 3years PQE+. based in Bristol (I think) let me know. It's an in house job about to be advertised - a friend of mine at the firm mentioned it at lunch.

stressed2007 · 18/01/2010 22:00

I wish I lived in Bristol - finding things desperate here to say the least on the recruitment front

legalalien · 19/01/2010 13:58

am I allowed to ask what sort of area of law you're looking for? I have a disparate band of antipodean friends who quite often contact me if they have a job vacancy.

crumpetsolo · 19/01/2010 14:00

Hmmm, I live in Bristol - but tax not commercial. Boo. Back to cake baking it is..

legalalien · 19/01/2010 18:39

I also know of a role for a Swiss qualified commercial lawyer in London or Zurich (I think). Probably not much chance of finding someone here....

stressed2007 · 19/01/2010 19:46

I am/was a corporate lawyer (for about 9 years) both UK and Hong Kong qualified (expat life - great!) who then became a corporate/general company psl
