How Do I Increase My Income Without It all Going On Childcare?

I am in a bit of a dilemma , dh is s/emp and business is nose-diving. However if I was working most if not all would go on childcare .
I have just been on the inland revenue website and it is really depressing . I can't work evenings as he is not home until I am just about to go to bed. Has anyone found a job where they could work from home without a big start fee? or even take ds ? I know it is all a bit far fetched but I am getting quite worried. Or a term time job so I would only have to pay childcare for one(dd is at school). I have looked at teaching assistant but they are all quite far away and I don't have a car and it pays about £5.00 per hr ds on his own would cost about £3 an hour.
Previously I worked in a bank, and a long time ago was a beauty therapist . I know it is a long shot but I thought there must be others in this situation.
Thanks for listening

i worked in a day nursery up until my daughter was born assumed i would get free child care not the case , it all depends who u work for

Childcare is not always free to nursery workers... depends on the owner. Plus you would need to be qualified or working towatds something, I think.

Collette I understand your dilemma, both my dh and I are self employed and it's really hard to work out what you can claim if you can't predict what your income will be.

What did you do work-wise before you had children? What qualifications do you have?

I work in the cash office of a big supermarket-get around 5.76 per hour tax free as only work 16 hours a week-two evenings-6-11pm and Sundays 10-4pm or one evening and sat and sunday-I wouldnt really be doing much else and on average I take home £430.00 pcm. Worth a thought??

I do merchandising in a supermarket for two different companies. There are merchandisers for loads of stuff magazines, books, hair accesories, sewing stuff, cd's, cards, balloons etc. We are not employed by the supermarket. I am considering Betterware though.

Wordsmith- I used to work in a bank - mostly opening accounts, loans ,arrears , reception
I have beauty therapy qualifications( very rusty and looking a bit old I think) It is so complicated with child tax credit dh does my head in when I try and get definate figures out of him. He keeps trying to explain how long it takes for his accountant to confirm his figures etc . Meanwhile we are receiving an amount which corresponds with when he was earning about £400 per month more. Being s/emp is not all it is cracked up to be . Or at least at the moment
Dropinthe - that sounds quite good because you are not paying tax it makes it a better option. The problem is the hours that dh does are long and iregular so it is hard to know what hours I could work. Something we will have to sort out or we won't be able to change things.
Thanks a lot for the replies - I have to go to bed as I have to take ds to ent tomorrow and I don't know how we are going to get there .. He stuck plasticine up his nose.
