Can't find a part-time teaching job. Feeling stupid for thinking I would...

I have 2 dds, one 12 and one 8. I have been able to be a SAHM since they were born and work with husband p/t in his own business. After years of volunteering in everything from pre-school upwards, I decided to do a flexible PGCE and qualified as a teacher last December. I was offered a f/t job whilst doing my last placement and decided to try it although younger dd still at lower school. My husband was brilliant and a friend also helped with childcare and it worked but I was made to feel by the school as though any thought of work/life balance was ridiculous and I felt like I never saw my dcs. I asked to go p/t, they said no and after deep thought, I left.

I am hoping for a p/t job for this year until younger dd moves schools but there's nothing out there. Similarly, I can't seem to get any supply and whilst I keep trying to look at it from all angles, I can't come up with a solution. I know in my heart that I did the right thing by leaving but in my head, I wonder if I did. Please cheer me up .

Hey, that's more like it!

I'm really pleased to hear you worked today and enjoyed it. Once the positive mindset kicks in, you will have jobs popping up all over the place. You'll be fighting them off with a stick!

When you talk to people about what you're looking for, tell them you love teaching but it's also really important for you to have time for your daughters. People will respect you for it and you'll soon find a school with a work/life ethos that is in alignment with you. There's no point in pretending you love working long hours when you don't!

Let us know how you get on. We can all celebrate when you get that fab part-time job in that lovely school!

Just wanted to say good luck!

I have just gone down from a 3 day / wk and extra hours + stress job to a 2 day / wk less stressful - less pay! job and love it.

Good luck!

while you are looking for a pt teaching position perhaps utilise your skills and start earning some money by arranging toy parties.... i recently started, want to go into teaching when my daughter is school age. You can make it your own business and grow it as you want. you might find it works for you and helps pass the time while waiting for teaching post.

check out www.tishtashtoys.co.uk

if nothing else they are beautiful toys you might like some for your kids for christmas

Hiya, me again!

I've got another couple of suggestions-

I was looking again for myself, for maternity care assistants within 25 miles of St Albans, where I live, and this part time teaching post came up. How they match those I don't know but maybe it might be useful to you?

www.careerbuilder.co.uk/UK/JobSeeker/Jobs/JobDetails.aspx?ipath=EXIND&siteid=cbindeed&Job_DID=J3I5KQ 5YY3TMVSKPT74&cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=706839c6f9d44bd0ac1fffc60c5b8625-309616546-J4-5

It's 4 days a week in Bishops Stortford, any good?

I also got a newsletter from my daughters school today saying that they haven't been able find a suitable maternity cover for one of the teachers there, in the meantime another member of staff is filling in, so they might be worth ringing emailing? Can't hurt to send your CV over can it? It's Fleetville JMI, in St Albans. Look them up.

Hope that helps

Hi again everyone,

Thank you all for your replies and for the time and effort you are putting into my problem . I really appreciate it.

I have been working since Weds at my old school which has been lovely. I didn't work yesterday pm because I went to visit the school with the p/t job. Lovely school and I am going to apply. Then another p/t job has come up today and the Head has asked me to go in to see her after half-term. So things are picking up - maybe the positive vibes are working as you say Speckledeggy. I will definitely let you know how it all goes. But I can't tell you how much happier I feel going into the half-term .

Thanks Mamayaya for your support. I have felt so good working at my old school but knowing I can walk away from all the stress at the end of every day. I'm glad things have worked out for you too.

Thanks Beth, I'll have a look at the website definitely.

Hi Seeded. You are so kind to keep looking out for me. Again, Bishops S is a bit far and prob so is St A but I will look up Fleetville just in case. Thanks for the tip. Must go to bed now, can't believe it got so late. I think I may have dozed in front of the telly . Happy hols everyone.

PS Did you hear Ian Hislop say that MN was for 'young mums' earlier - I'm pushing 45 (!) now fgs! But MN keeps me young. Night, night...
