Im considering working as a private tutor! Good idea, bad idea?

Hi all - I name changed today but yes I am a regular, tablecloths judge flounce etc

I studied for a 4 year teaching degree, with history and despite my best efforts I managed to fail my final tp (due to the burden of paperwork and planning)

I love history (especially local, family history and methodology of history) I would dearly dearly love to work as an archivist or museum curator - to do this though probably involves an MA at a uni far too far away from where I live atm (and cant afford to move closer)

I have spent this evening reading through freelance and working from home threads and wondering "Could I offer home tutoring?"

Is that something feasible?
Could I make enough money to survive as a lone parent?
I know I am not a qualified teacher but looking at this site it seems that being qualified is essential (it mentions graduates)

I think I could coach kids in maths english history art textiles (knitting, sewing, quilting etc) to say 11 year olds or maybe older

Thinking fairly randomly you understand
Still in the brainstorm stage

Oh and learning to play Recorder!

Reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation and writing skills

SATs preparation?

Good point about the kids - Im Home Educating them actually so by the time other kids get home from school my own probably want a break from me

Trouble is though what can I do (having completed course) with history working from home?

I cant think of anything, family history research is an option I guess but surely that involves trips around the country looking at parish registers and going to london etc to look up records...... doesnt sound very compatable with home educating

DS is desparate never to grace the doors of a school again - so Im thinking as I have very little family support working from home, some sort of business is the way to go

How up to speed are you on APP (for KS3)? SATs are no more for this age group.

It could work really well.

But I think you need to do your H/W before you can offer tutoring in your non-specialist subjects, because your target parents are generally going to be looking for a measurable raise in attainment, which probably means identifying specific weaknesses & showing an improvement. APP is probably your best bet in doing so!

Could you offer History A-Level/undergrad support?
