Getting paid to do surveys online ...

Ghosty · 16/05/2003 10:32

I have just been surfing the net to see what there is around as part time work as DH and I have realised we need a bit more money coming in and I found this website that offers money for doing surveys online.

Has anyone ever done this sort of thing? Are they all scams (they ask for money to register ... US$30 ... not that much but still) or are these things worth doing ?...

Could be my dream job ... doing surveys inbetween checking Mumsnet ... but I was stung in the UK before by a work from home scheme that asked for 15 pounds and then there was no work (the bloke doing it was eventually uncovered by Watchdog)....

Thoughts?

PS really really really don't want to go out to work at the moment ... am really cherishing my role as a SAHM!

Thanks for that KS ...
Well ... I am doing a correspondence course at the moment in Writing for Children ... but that is not going to make me any money in the short term ...
My other skill is teaching ... but that means going out to work
And what I am best at is producing plays for children ... used to be Head of Drama in my last job ... but again that means going out to work and the headaches of childcare ... not to mention the guilt involve ... and not forgetting that I am ttc at the moment so don't want to get a job and then leave again after 5 minutes ....

Ghosty I have been having a similar dilemma just this week. I want to get a job because we could do with the extra money and I quite enjoy going out and working but....

I don't want to work school holidays, I don't want my daughter in after-school care every night and I am aware that I will need time off for her medical appointments, etc. I have no problem with anyone else doing this, it just doesn't feel right for me.

Anyway, I have now, about an hour ago, decided not to apply for the job I had set my sights on but to bear it in mind for the future when DD is older. In the meantime, I am keeping my fingers crossed that my friend gets the job she's gone for and can give a me good recommendation into her term-time job....!

I do some face painting but decided not to do it as a job because it meant being out of the house at weekends and after school without DD. Time for that when she's older.

I was speaking to a woman at a craft fair on Saturday who paints fairy boxes/mirrors, etc. - absolutely gorgeous, I bought three mirrors for parties DD is off to in the next few weeks. She does entirely as a hobby and then sells the things she makes to make room for her to make more money. She'll never make a fortune but just likes doing it. I think this is the only way craft things work.

If you are good at doing plays for children and also contemplating writing for children, why not put together a book of plays covering topics that come up at school e.g. bullying, or just fun things or new Nativity plays? Every parent in the UK must have seen the Sleepy Shepherd by now.....

Maybe if you put together one or two you could sell them cheaply locally?

Metrobaby · 16/05/2003 11:54

I've never done this, but I often think that you could make a bit of money by buying secondhand stuff through car boot sales, local ads, and NCT sales and then re-selling them on eBay. I've tended to notice that people are prepared to pay a lot more for certain things on eBay. You'll have to look into this and do a bit of research etc as this is just my gut feeling (which could of course be completely off !)

Hope everything works out for you Ghosty.

jodee · 16/05/2003 15:56

Metrobaby, I could be mistaken, but I think this is something that Rhiannon does (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone?). It's something that's been appealing to me lately - I've been doing a lot of buying on Ebay and would like to recoup some of the money.

ghosty, doubt very much if you can make money doing the surveys, I tried a couple once ages ago and found you had to do millions to earn anything and then would you get any money in the end? I wondered about ironing but haven't a clue how to go about it and then mentioned it to few people who all seemed to look down on the idea but I too need/want something that can fit into enjoying being a SAHM and all it entials.

anais · 16/05/2003 21:02

I have made a bit of money doing online surveys - but it takes ages to earn for the money to add up to anything, and it's only a tiny amount. It tends to be a case of earning points in one form or another which can then be exchanged for vouchers - not really an extra income. I wouldn't advise paying any money to join. There's also online mystery shopping, which I have heard others have had some luck with. I would suggest you check out this site which might give you some ideas ...there are some others which I can't think of right now - if you want to email me I can give you some of the urls of the sites I do surveys for.

HTH

Ghosty · 16/05/2003 21:27

Thanks for that anais ... only I can't seem to access that site ... Could you do the link again for me ... I'd be really grateful ... thanks
And cheers to everyone else ... got really excited for a minute but realised that if it was so easy to earn money doing such a thing everyone would be doing it!!

Hi I have started doing mystery shopping - for NOP - cyber shopper - found it very good, you do some on-line training & a couple of practice 'visits' and have just started getting work - and what is also nice is that you can do telephone 'visits' which is nice - get paid about £7 - £8 for these. Ok you don't get paid huge amounts but am going to do one next week in an electrical shop where I get paid £7 & also can spend up to £10 on a small purchase which they refund you. Maybe I'm easily pleased but I quite like it - though have had to cancel a couple today because I am too sick to get there! Worth a try so have a look - no good with links so will post address once I've looked it up!

zippyb · 16/05/2003 21:47

Here it is - cybershoppers.nop.co.uk

lisaj · 16/05/2003 22:16

Ghosty - I came across the on-line surveys yesterday and have to admit they do seem a bit too good to be true.

Thanks Zippyb for the info on mystery shopping. I have previously signed up for this, but not online, however never actually got given anything to do, so I will be interested to see what comes of this.

anais · 17/05/2003 22:03

Sorry bout that Ghosty - there was me feeling all smug about being able to do links....I'll try again...

anais · 17/05/2003 22:04

Arghhh, I don't know why it's not working...anyone any ideas??? Anyway, the url is www.homeworkinguk.com

GeorginaA · 18/05/2003 10:14

I think you need to write the bit in front to stop it thinking it's a local link on this site.

anais · 18/05/2003 21:08

Ah, thanks Georgina, I'll try that then...

homeworkinguk

Yay, it works, thank you - I've been puzzling about that

StripyMouse · 18/05/2003 21:52

Ghosty - if you have 2ndary school teaching qualifications, there are loads of sites that have teachers helping with homework questions, exam practice essay setting and marking etc. etc. I knew two women who did this part time as a way of making money and seemed happy doing it. I wish i had the names of speicific sites but shouldn?t be too hard for you to search for if you are interested.

StripyMouse · 18/05/2003 21:57

Ghosty - another thing to think of if you have secondary school teaching qualifications is to consider exam marking. I know it is seasonal and can be very dull but you can work at home and it is reasonably paid. Plus they are crying out for markers in all sorts of subjects all the time

Ghosty · 18/05/2003 22:23

Thanks StripyMouse ... only problem is that I am primary trained ... I know that in the UK it is quite a lucrative thing to mark SATs but they don't have them here ...
Thanks anyway ...
I have thought of doing some tutoring ... but again that would mean going OUT to do it!!
