job interview whilst pregnant

I would be grateful if anyone has any advice, about applying for a job whilst pregnant.
I am in the post currently and fit what is required but due to delays I will be over 8 months pregnant when going for the interview, it looks like it will be a competitive field there is one aspect I am lacking (which I can't get on my CV in time) but there again I have experience of doing the job etc etc.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to deal with the issue? what should I or shouldn't I say? what can I say to make myself more attractive?
my boss is very good so a start date has not been discussed (I would consider this inappropriate unless it was part of a job offer ) however in turn I told him I was pregnant a long time ago to make it clear I wasn't hiding anything IYSWIM

To be completely clear this was a short term contract so I know they don't have to give me any job

Thanks

Don't know if this helps but I was put on a TRA (temp responsibility allowance) with my work before I fell pregnant. Just meant I got a promotion but only on a temporary basis to complete a project. They then decided to make it up to a permanent post but that meant that they had to advertise to everyone internally. I told my boss I was pregnant very early but he still encouraged me to go for it. I had to appy for it and go through the interview process. I got the job (and then went off on maternity leave - oops! he he)!!

You have to be very careful what you say otherwise they can easily descriminate against you. I would apply in the same way you normally would. If you are the best person for the job then they can't say no!

If you are in the post currently, doing the job well and your boss knows you are pregnant, I'm not sure you need to 'deal with the issue' tbh. It's not as if it's a new job, you are unknown to the employer and are going to walk into the interview with an unexpected bump.

Who gets the job should depend on who is the best for it, your pregnancy is irrelevant. Treating it as otherwise would be discrimination.

You are in a good position if you are already doing the job so focus on that, the skills and experience you are bringing. If your boss wants to discuss how best to cover your maternity leave or something, then fine, but I don't think you should treat your pregnancy as a relevant issue when deciding the best person for the job because that might indicate to your boss that it's ok to make the decision based on that, which it is not.

I was in a smiliar position to you. Was covering someone else's mat leave in a more senior role, got pg, and was eoncouraged to apply for a permanent role at that level. I was interviewed for the role when about 5 months pregnant, and offered the role the week before I went on mat leave (there were lots of internal delays for verious reasons), they even made it effective from before I went on mat leave, so the pay rise help with mat pay.

Anyway after that ramble, where I just wanted to reassure you it does happen, my pregnancy was never mentioned at any point in the offical process. It was clearly the elephant in the room in the interivew (in fact is was the all singing all dancing bump-jiggling elephant). Just go through the whole process as if the pregnancy wasn't there.

thanks all
I guess I was just looking for experiences/comments really.

I havn't decided yet whether to refer to being pregnant or what to say if anyone says anything.

Ot does feel a bit like 'the elephant in the room' ATM

(I will have to go to several pre-interview chats so there will be lots of opportunity to discuss it!)

Came to update you all!! it got complicated and delayed but....

3 of us went for the job I was by far and away the best qualified (eg I have a postgrad qualification in one aspect of the job) amongst other things

there was another person currently doing the same thing for a different employer

the job went to the third person

(I was advised to have my baby and apply again later!!)

oh and the start date/mat leave/being pregnant etc was discussed with one person pre interview but the whole thing was never mentioned otherwise

What do you want to do now nextjob? Do you feel your pregnancy was an issue, particularly given the comment about having baby then applying later?

MrsDenning · 07/10/2009 23:32

If your pregnancy was a factor in their decision not to offer you the job, ie but for the pregnancy you would have got the job that is sex discrimination. you would need to prove this, and bringing a case is a lot of hassle. Do you have legal expense insurance? If you want to take things further, find yourself a Chambers ranked lawyer who specialises in maternity and family friendly rights.
Sorry to hear you did not get the job.
