Inspiration for name ideas for my new venture, please.

I am going to start a new little venture have been a sahm for 8 years and now all my kids are in school and pre school i am looking for something to do. We live in an area with lots of old people and recently my gran has been looking for someone to do odd jobs weed her front border, clean the windows, fetch her fish and chips etc. However the gardener is man and she feels uncomfortable with men which to be honest most of them are in the area and would not even contemplate a little job such as weeding a border.
So i have kind of thought it may be a good venture, i dont want to earn lots just a little extra than we get would be good, but i need inspiration for a name any ideas?.
I am also a keen cook so would love the possibility to offer cakes and things as well do you think i could expand this to mums?
Any help appreciated

I think it sounds great and I think it would be popular with mums too - basically you are offering a service which would be an extra pair of hands or someone to do those things which mums / oldies can't easily manage for whatever reason. When the twins were little we had a Homestart volunteer and for me it was a godsend to have an extra pair of hands for a couple of hours a week - sometimes she would help to run errands, or help me in the house or do the jobs which need two people, not just one.
Also have you thought about doing dog-walking - for many old people that may be popular, especially in this heat.

I'm rubbish with names but I wanted to say what a fab idea it is I would definately use a handy mummys helper like that I am currently making a mental list of a million things that could get done

Good luck

What about:
Helping Hands
Handy Helpers (gives scope for expansion)
Supermum
The Housework Fairy (I'm always asking for one of these!)

buktus · 03/07/2009 12:10

can't you use your first name?

......'s Handy Help? makes it simple, and easiy to remember to spread the word.

buktus · 03/07/2009 12:15

I am at the end of the alphabet though do you think that will matter when advertising etc

Watching this with interest

ipiratethief · 03/07/2009 12:19

i don't think it will be offputting, as you are talking about listings, in publications, that prob cost a fortune to advertise in. If you have local flyers, local mini mags, they will prob just insert you in the catagory section. I don't think it would matter so much.

mollyroger · 03/07/2009 12:21

How about Handy Mandy?

ipiratethief · 03/07/2009 12:21

couldn't you be a

'Handy Woman', instead of a Handy Man!!

MadreInglese · 03/07/2009 12:22

Mrs Handy Help

buktus · 03/07/2009 12:23

Another quick question, i know that the gardeners they use charge the old people £10 an hour, do you think charging £7.50 - £8 hour is fair and that would be to do anything they need doing not just the gardening i want to be a complete service, clenaning, gardening, if they want someone to help them at the supermarket etc

OP posts:
buktus · 03/07/2009 12:25

i like Mrs Handy Help

I was contemplating something along the lines of Mrs Jobs but a)you're not doing techie things and b) it reminds me of poo so thats right out...

No job too small? although again doesnt mention the laydee factor.

Are you allowed to do cooking bwt without the great big H&S council rigmarole?

MadreInglese · 03/07/2009 12:28

well it does what it says on the tin

buktus · 03/07/2009 12:41

i dont mean masses of cooking i mean baking them a sponge or whatever i dont mean loads of cooking, kind of the same as someone going to a cake stall at our local fete etc

I like Handy Mandy best.

geordieminx · 03/07/2009 13:01

I think pricing might be difficult - Say someone wanted you to go to supermarket and get shopping - how long would you anticipate it took - would the customer think it wouldnt take as long - i.e - Personally weekly shop takes 2 hours from getting in car to getting home - but would someone pay £15 for you to go and get shopping?

Or if they just want you to pop to the shop for milk that would only take 10 minutes, do you then only charge £1?

mollyroger · 03/07/2009 13:02

so do I

i like the pun

brimfull · 03/07/2009 13:04

handy mandy sounds a bit like you're offering hand jobs though

mollyroger · 03/07/2009 13:11

well Handy Man-dy then?

brimfull · 03/07/2009 13:28

girl friday?

buktus · 03/07/2009 13:52

maybe i should price depending on what it is then i think

OP posts:
geordieminx · 03/07/2009 13:58

Dont get me wrong, I think its a great idea, you just need to work out how it will work - also some hour jobs will be a lot more hard work than others?

Fimbo · 03/07/2009 13:58

For some reason Odd Job Sue, came to mind.
