Why, in a recession, is it so hard to recruit people?

I am advertising a nice little P/T job

No qualifications necessary

Family friendly (ish) hours

Above minimum wage (just)

Free lunch

& can I get a new member of staff

The number of people who apply then pull out when invited to interview or after interview because it is too far THEN WHY DID YOU APPLY - can you not read a map/google an address/look on multimap??

Also maybe advert at local secondary school area...older children are more likely to be able to get themselves off to school once up and about...leaving mum free for the 8am start

How long as this job been advertised?

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 22:51

MrsBonJovi - what is a local agent?

I'm thinking about agency....but the cost & the newspaper is extortionate but I may have to grit my teeth & pay

llareggub I really wanted dual purpose - but I will accept just childcare if I have to

I contacted the high school last night & we are cautiously talking atm - they aren't sure if it's appropriate to advertise it

What about advertising in local college for someone, I started a childcare night class in Feb and there's loads on the course who are only in voluntary work and would love a paid job.
Is this the nursery in a school you had a thread about KatyMac

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 22:57

Unfortunately no, that never happened

Sorry meant local newsagent..

Would avoid recruitment agency..very costly.

BTW The Jobcentre are extremely short staffed due to this government closing offices despite being told by the union of the chaos it would cause in view the the predicted (correctly) recession.

They can barely staff the office to sign people fortnightly let alone ensure the jobseekers are really actively seeking at the mo.

I agree it may be an idea to ensure the hours. wage etc are clearly advertised in Jobcentre

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:02

I know MrsBonJovi, Best drinking buddy is JS+ manager (also I am ex JC)

Would it be worth ringing temp agency to find out costs (know lady slightly, she refers children to me) to ask how much it would be to advertise?.....just so she is aware of the vacancy - not that if I wasn't paying she would put anyone forward but.........

they usually charge a % of the salary iirc. its always worth ringing her, there are not that many jobs about at the moment, they might give you a good deal

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:07

Like 10%....or less?

OP posts:
MrsBonJovi · 04/06/2009 23:11

No harm in calling her...at least then you can work out costs and you never know she may know someone informally.

Had to say that about the crisis the jobcentre is in after the give the jobcentre a kick up the ass. Sorry Nancy it annoyed me...as did the comment about SAHM who just want the morning off..nothing to do with childs development and interaction with other children, housework, time with younger siblings..both were rather sweeping statements.

Katymac Is there any scope for increasing the pay? Also ensure the childcare you can offer for before school/inset days etc is highlighted..is it heavily discounted? Ensure the free training is mentioned

nancy75 · 04/06/2009 23:12

i think it all depends, i used to recruit for a massive retail chain and gave the agency alot of business, we used to pay a % of the annual salary, definately less than 10%, but on a much bigger salary, they might have a lowest fee if you get what i mean?

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:14

Before school/inset/school holidays all free for school age children (I have to charge for under 5's tho' normal rates - but you wouldn't pay travelling time iyswim)

It's difficult to put that in an ad tho'

mrs bonjovi, the pre school comment was obviously tongue in cheek, after all i am one of those stay at home mums!

as for the job centre i am talking about my experience of them over the last 10 years, trying to fill hundreds of vacancies and i have genuinely found that most of the candidates i have been sent have had no idea about the jobs they had applied, in fact some had actually told me they didnt want the job but had been told to attend the interview anyway! sorry if it annoyed you, but that is my experiance of it.

NervousNutty · 04/06/2009 23:22

Firstly is it over 16 hours ?? If not that might put some people off because of WTC kicking in at 16 hours and over.

Secondly, I would bite your hand off for that job if I lived closer. No one round here ever ever ever advertises for unqualified staff, unless they want a trainee under 24.

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:23

Night ladies

I have at least some new avenues for discussion in the morning

OP posts:
KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:24

it's 26 hrs

OP posts:
NervousNutty · 04/06/2009 23:26

Oh, no idea why people aren't up for it then as it would be ideal for someone like me. Infact, can you move to the West Mids and then readvertise

MrsBonJovi · 04/06/2009 23:28

Nancy75...didnt realise yours was a tongue in cheek comment! Sadly a lot of jobseekers are too scared to say a job is not suitable for them for fear of being not actively seeking, You probably caught the tail end of me getting fed up with weeks of gutter press about the failings of the jobcentre staff instead of the failings of the government due to job cuts!

Katymac...I would work for you if I had school age childred, What is wrong with people in your area?! Maybe do a recruitment open day or telephone interviews so you dont waste time with unsuitables.

Regarding childcare..."Free Over 5s childcare place for successful candidate outside of normal school hours/term"

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:28

Ummm....let me think (Norfolk Broads, Seaside, My Mum & Dad, Sailing on tap)......no thanks

OP posts:
NervousNutty · 04/06/2009 23:30

Don't blame you Katy, perhaps I should move by you lol.

KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:32

I really am going to bed now

I'm knackered

OP posts:
KatyMac · 04/06/2009 23:34
