Bank holiday in lieu for part-timer?

MrsJamin · 21/05/2009 18:51

I work part time but don't work Mondays - should my employer give me equivalent time off - i.e. I am on 0.5 FTE, so after 2 bank holiday mondays I can have a day off? Is this discretionary for the employer?

you should get the same, pro rata, as the full timers get. so if you work 0.5 fte you should get 0.5 what the full timers get. if they get 8 a year then you get 4 days off a year.

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 21/05/2009 18:59

IIRC, if you don't usually work on a BH, you aren't entitled to a day off in lieu for it. Flowerybeanbag is the lady to ask though, she is the Goddess of employment knowledge.

Look at that 50/50 answers already!

I stand corrected...

flowerybeanbag · 21/05/2009 19:24

Yes, if the full timers get 8 bank holidays, you should get 4. When you take them is between you and your employer, as long as you get 4 days off. If you look at your diary, even if you don't work Mondays, you will have some bank holidays on your normal days each year anyway. Check and see how many you will get because of Christmas/Boxing Day/New Year/Good Friday, and if it's less than 4, you will need one extra.

can anyone tell me what bank holidays we get in Scotland?

Littlefish · 21/05/2009 22:09

Any idea whether this applies to teachers too? I work on Thursdays and Fridays, so miss out on all the term-time bank holidays.

feedthegoat · 21/05/2009 22:13

I work for the Local Authority 2 days a week and get 40% entitlement granted at the time of the bank holiday in question (we work flexi time). Unfortunately I work mondays so owe 4 hours 28 minutes every bank holiday monday at the moment. I hate the fact that they are all at once.

MrsJamin · 22/05/2009 09:10

Brill, I might take Tuesday off (my employers are pretty flexible!)

ssd, a lot of people get 12, but I think there are 9 official ones.

1&2 Jan
Easter Monday (and some people get Good Friday)
2 in May
Fair Monday (and some people get Fair Friday)
September weekend Monday (and some people get the Friday)
25&26 Dec

MrsJamin · 23/05/2009 08:07

2nd Jan? Never heard of that one. Do you mean the August one by 'Fair monday' - and never heard of september weekend monday either. I'm guessing you aren't in England?

2nd Jan is only a Scottish one I think.

I work Tues, Weds and Thurs. I get five Bank holiday days off in addition to my annual leave.

Yaaaay!

TwoToTango · 23/05/2009 09:08

list of bank hols

I work part time (don't work Mondays) - it took my employer nearly 11 months to calculate my pro rata bank hol entitlement!!! Was glad I persisted as it means that every year (depending of which days Xmas, Boxing day and New Years Day fall on) I get an extra 1 or 2 days leave. Flowerys advice on how to calculate it was spot on although the HR Dept where I work came up with the same answer seemed to use a highly complicated formula to arrive at the same answer.

flowerybeanbag · 23/05/2009 22:22

I'm always in favour of keeping it simple wherever possible, and it usually is possible ime! Calculated formulas are easier to get wrong or use incorrectly, and more difficult for employees to understand.

It's a bt mad this though, isn't it?

I work in the NHS. I used to work three days s M,T,W but only got a pro-rata allowance for bank holidays because I was a part-timer.

This meant that every time a BH fell on a monday I had to use one of those BH days from my allowance and then I had to use annual leave for the others when I'd used up my quota.

I cottoned onto this and stopped working Mondays. This means I get about 5 extra days holiday a year (because I don;t need to use the BH allowance for BH mondays) and I'm also better off in terms of annual leave (because I'm not using it to cover the other BHs!!).

In total, I'm better off by something like 6 days a year - which equates to two weeks extra off work (given that I work 3 days a week).

What's the incentive to work mondays? Aren't employers onto this??
