Really, really do not like my job any more.
I've been with the organisation 22 years, in this post 15 years on and off. I need to make moves to change. My writing & confidence always holds me back. I would like to be a tourist guide but I know I have to study to make the move. Any tips please.

unpaid work exp get foot in door
college course and work exp
visit tourist guides chat what is job really like, what skills needed etc
why do you want to do it.think of your positives, things to offer

Agree with scottishmummy - work exp is the best foot in the door, and allows you to find out if you really enjoy working in that sector. Is it possible for you to do work over the weekends for a little while to test it out?

Starbear · 21/05/2009 07:48

I haven't thought of that. The Big Bus company buses are near my place of work I could ask to work in the summer when my DH is at home with DS.

Tigerbear Love your other thread, very motivational. Have you thought about making money out of it like those American self-help gurus

I went part time for a year- stayed 3 days a week in current job and built up experience in dream job, now ready to take plunge into new job and just handed in my notice.

Starbear · 22/05/2009 22:14

Thandeka may I ask what your dream/new job is going to be?

Freelance educational consultant for my specialist subject.

Could you go part time to build up experience in your dream job?

Thandeka · 23/05/2009 14:56

Ooops posted before I finished.

Meant to say financially I was lucky as was able to get paid for both jobs so financially wasnt a problem- I guess going part time and then not getting paid for the other part of the job maybe tricky.

Starbear · 23/05/2009 20:01

Well, what a prestigious job Part-time now in a well paid job which is very demanding. I want to maintain time at home with Ds. I'm going to ask the HR departments of various tourist spots near me whats qualifications are desirable and experience. Could volunteer for some such as Hampton Court. If I could do some Weekends when DH is at home it might work. Thank for the tips
