Employment law or guidelines regarding accomodation and food when away from home

Help need some info on employment law, guidelines or whatever with regards to trips away from home and if and what they need to provide accomodation and food wise.

What does the contract say? Would normally expect reasonable costs incurred to be refunded. Does the contract or policy at work not deal with these issues at all?

Dont think it is mentioned in the contract, this is for research I am doing, but concerns employees and myself where I work. We are normally provided with some sort of accomodation and meals when away from home, but it varies greatly and is veru inconsistent. I want to know if they are any actual laws covering this area of employement, they all seems to cover amount of hours worked and breaks etc, but not accomodation or catering.

maybe no laws or guidelines exist.

Have you tried looking in the DirectGov website? They have all sorts of useful information about legal stuff related to work.

I've just had a look at DirectGov and I don't think there are any laws which say your employer has to pay for these things. This link is to a page showing how you might be able to claim these expenses against your tax - and no-one would ever have to do that if the law said that your employer had to pay your expenses, because then you wouldn't be abe to claim them against tax as well, IYSWIM?

No there aren't laws saying what expenses an employer has to reimburse, that's all a contractual issue, the law regarding expenses is about which are taxable or not. Your employer needs a consistent policy, but as long as they are not paying for things that are taxable and not declaring them, which sounds unlikely, then they're not breaking any laws.

Right so no laws, hmm trying to do a literature review and there is no literature to review. Nothing like making it difficult for myself is there.

So don't know what to put in that bit of my report, have mentioned working time regulations and breaks etc.
