Should I tell work they are overpaying me?

I work for a big company.

I work 20 hrs a week. Recently there was a big change around with people taking voluntary reduncacies and others changing hours.

For some reason the pay department think I am now working full time - 40 hrs a week.

I am liable to pay back the overpayment. Would you tell or wait to see if they discover it?

Tell. Immediately.

It is not only the most honest thing to do, it's also the most sensible - you don't want to be paying it back in months time. And if you don't, it will make you look very very bad to your company.

You need to tell them right away. You will have to pay it back. If you wait for them to descover it then you could be in real trouble.

Tell ASAP.

Would you be ale o find the money to pay back when they do discover in 3,6,9, 12 months? That will be a big wedge.

Issue of honesty, you would be on the phone immediately if they had UNDERPAID you, works both ways.

Of course you should tell them. They will discover it at some point, and as they are paying you double, there is no legitimate way you could claim you didn't realise.

You will need to pay it back but over the same amount of time that it was given.

flowerybeanbag · 12/05/2009 11:28

Not necessarily lionheart. An employer can take back overpayment straightaway if they want to, there's no obligation for them to agree a repayment schedule, although most obviously would, particularly given it's their mistake in the first place.

OrmIrian · 12/05/2009 11:29

Yes. Because they will take it off you at some point and that will hurt!

BeautifulBubbles · 12/05/2009 11:29

Told them. They said they mixed my pay roll number up with someone else. They said I would recieve a letter in the post asking how many installments I wished to pay it back in. They thanked me for letting them know
