Wanting to work as a counsellor

I already have a Level 2 certificate in Counselling and Communication Skills, and I am now looking at taking a Level 3 course in Counselling Studies (about £800). Ultimately I'm interested in the Level 4 diploma, but it's £2.5k and lasts 2 years part time so isn't really an option at the moment.

Can anyone advise on how necessary the diploma is to get a counselling job (e.g. with an addiction centre, family therapy etc) as opposed to starting private practice (which I wouldn't even dream of attempting without the diploma and several years of experience under my belt)?

I have a diploma and spent over 6 years to complete it part time whilst doing voluntary 'supportive' work with mums who had postnatal illness as well as a rape centre and paid employment as a nurse working with both women seeking termination and also those who'd suffered pregnancy loss.
I am now in private practice and fully supported by a well known clinical supervisor in my speciality.
Most paid employment appear to seek BACP accreditation from their counsellors IME.
good luck
