A change to terms and conditions of work

I have been with my current employer for a year and a half. I was sent a letter earlier this year to say that I may have to take a drop in salary due to the economic conditions etc.

Two weeks ago my boss confirmed that I will have to cut down a day and take a pay cut too. He also told me that the new arrangement would start in May.

However, I haven't received anything in writing.

Presumably a change to t&c's should be put down in writing and should I be given notice too?

I've had a quick google of employment websites, but can't find confirmation of this.

I'd be grateful for some advice on this.

Is that take a pay cut and lose a day's work or the pay cut is due to losing a day's work?

Pay cut is due to losing a day's work.

Does your contract give particular hours por state these can be lowered when needed?

I had a contract once that said as buisness dicated my hours could be lowered - so there would have been no need to give me a new contract.

Check what it states about hours?

Lanky · 01/05/2009 12:55

Ah, I don't have a contract.

I'm not querying the change, I simply want to know if the firm needs to give me notice and if they need to give the change to T&C's in writing.

It should be your notice period - which if you don't have a contract would be 1 week. Get something in writing!!

flowerybeanbag · 01/05/2009 13:55

Not only should you be given proper notice, but they cannot make a change to your terms and conditions without your consent either. Plus not providing you with a contract or at least a written statement of some of the main terms and conditions of your employment is illegal. Why haven't you got a contract yet?

Lanky · 01/05/2009 14:11

I see from your profile Flowerybeanbag that you are an HR consultant, so thanks for your help on this.

I have asked numerous times for a contract. It's a disorganised and understaffed company, which is why I have nothing, other than my letter of engagement, to set out what my terms of employment are.

Do I have any choice but to accept if I want to keep my job?

Also, about a year ago I negotiated to work at home from one day a week. I do have this in writing. However, my boss has tried to suggest that this will no longer be possible. Presumably, they can't take this away from me can they?

Can I just confirm:
THe company needs to put the change to terms and conditions in writing and need's to give me appropriate written notice.

I have had two weeks' verbal notice. Is this good enough?

just going off subject- compaines can change you contract and hours as and when they like without anty prior warning to yourselfs at all but in your contract is has to state - that the company has the right to change the contract without prior warning to yourself and you have to sign this.

unofrtunatly this is dp's contract and he works for a big global company.

flowerybeanbag · 01/05/2009 14:19

It's not just about notice, they need you to consent to the change. Is this change just you or is it all the staff? If it's everyone, then you all working together to oppose it or at least have an input would be best.

Obviously if you're happy with the change then fine, but if you're not, you can refuse to consent to the change. Have a read here about changes to terms and conditions, there are various hoops your employer needs to go through, and here about if you disagree with a proposed change.

All this would apply to your working from home one day a week as well.

Lanky · 01/05/2009 14:34

Ok. Will have a read and then go from there.

Many thanks
Amanda
