Reshuffle of department - can they do this?

My MIL works for a blind charity, taking care of blind clients. She is one of 4 'senior' positions under a manager.

They are having a department re shuffle and have told her that her job no longer exists. She will have to re-apply for what is essentially the same job, its just that now there are only 3 of them and I think there is a slight paycut in the works.

Can they do this? I was a bit that they could just tell her that her job no longer existed...

She has only worked there 8 months or so, so I dont think she would qualify for redundancy.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

Yes, they can do this. She is being made redundant in effect, under the banner of a restructure. She will now have to apply for other jobs within the company, however they should support and give her priority. Unfortunatley she has not been there long enough for a payout, its rubbish. This has just happened to me and I am maternity leave!!.

Oh well, at least I can tell her I asked the wise world of MN!

Sorry to hear about yours - must be such a pain to have to re-apply when you are not in any sort of work mode!

It sounds as though the headcount is being reduced from 4 to 3 and the jobs rejigged a bit to allow this to happen, and then the 4 are being required to apply for the 3 jobs, one person then being made redundant, is that right? Sounds perfectly fine to me, if so. Have they had any kind of consultation meetings about it?
