Ok so I am in the very early stages of pregnancy (6-7 weeks) for 2nd dc (woohoo, very happy been trying for a while).

Freelance work has been sloow for last 6 months. Today a call from agent for an excellent position that would really be great for me and I would love. But it has to be for 18 months. She kept saying they need continuity it is the most important thing. I have a very good relationship with her based on 8 years of putting me forward for great freelance and permanent work.

So I said I would really love to, but I should let you know I am in the early stages of pregnancy. Dh thinks I did the right thing, I mean, I felt I couldn't ignore the fact that one of their main criteria was someone who would do the whole project. But I don't know. What do you think?

You did the right thing. It would have been dishonest to not say anything, particularly when that was a large concern for them.

Yes, it will serve you better in the long run. You will reinforce your relationship with her by being honest - if you lied, she wouldn't be able to trust you again. This way, in the future she'll be able to offer you something similar and trust you when you say you can.

You never know, they might well come back to you asking if you can do it for a few months after all. I often find when clients say "it has to be XYZ", a few meetings later they change their minds...

Ok good good, two out of two.

It is pretty much all based on trust.

You did the right thing, definitely. No point compromising your professionalism and good reputation - so important with freelance work.

BlingDreaming · 27/04/2009 15:50

Definitely the right thing. If it was a permament role, I think it's a bit murkier. But for a freelance position, part of the deal is that you have to just be there and don't get the benefits of maternity leave etc. If you had lied about it, you would have seriously damaged your relationship with this person.

Congratulations by the way!

Thanks Bling! Very happy!, so I guess it's back to lying around eating oranges while ds is a nursery 3 days a week
