Just got a degree-but no idea how to sell myself at interviews

I am in my 30s and have just got an English degree. I have worked so hard, and like many posters here combined it with family/childcare etc. The problem is that I am applying for jobs in the £14-£17K bracket and with little responsibility because I have no confidence in myself. Two interviewers have looked at me with puzzled expressions as to why a graduate would apply for such jobs?? I worked in a local government job all during my late teens till late twenties, with no offer of promotion, despite being a good worker, when I realised I loved learning, and wanted more from life. Now I know more, but haven't a clue how to put it to use. I did think about teaching, but after getting the knock-back from a couple of on-the-job training programmes (left applying far too late) I am not sure. Any ideas??

Apart from teaching, what else would you like to do? Charities? Marketing? PR? Writing? Administration?

Some websites:
