What do you think when someone tells you they've been made redundant? Self-appointed therapists step this way I need to sit on the mn "couch".

I ask because I'm having real trouble telling people I have been made redundant. I know it's silly but somehow I feel that people are going to judge me (she must have been rubbish at her job). Also I think it's difficult as there are so many people to tell so every time I go out I can't get away from it and get on with my life.
Anyone willing to give me a pep talk and elp me pull myself together/hold my head high again?

I think.. that's rotten for you.. hope you find something soon..

don't think anymore about it.. it's life.. people get made redundant.. people find new jobs..

just think oh no thats horrible. most people are aware of whats going on at the moment, loosing your job now is no indication of how good/bad you were at it.

Hold your head up high and don't think people will judge you - they won't. Unfortunately there are a lot of people in the same boat at the moment, including many of my friends. If you were rubbish at your job you would have been sacked - not the same as being made redundant, so don't feel embarrassed!

I can totally relate to this. I too am being made redundant.

For ages I just really didn't want to talk about it with anyone other than my colleagues who are in the same boat.I found it really embarassing even though it was the whole office that was being shut down and nothing to do with my abilities.

It has got easier with time and unfortunately I know so many people in the same position that i am starting to feel less embarassed about it.

one thing to do is remember it is the ROLE that was made redundant not the PERSON

I've always found saying my role became redundant easier to handle

MrsMattie · 08/05/2009 20:43

I think

'God, that's terrible'
'Poor thing'
'Hope you can find something else soon'
'There but for the Grace of God go I...'

in that order.

I honestly would never think someone lost their job because they weren't good at it. Being made redundant is not the same as being sacked.

I know what you mean. I might have felt the same way as you a few years ago.

But then my husband was made redundant and it was nothing to do with how he did his job but how well (or badly) the company was surviving. In this day and age, I think it is more normal to have experienced redundancy at some point in your career than not to have done (in the private sector, especially).

I honestly think you need to look at it that way and not make a tough situation worse by feeling anyone is judging you for being in it.
