What to say on application forms about my last job when it only lasted 2 weeks

Obviously it looks bad that I only stayed for 2 weeks, and I also wouldn't be putting them down as a reference either.

My main reason for leaving was that the hours were really unsuitable.

I explained this on a job application a couple of weeks ago and have heard nothing. Obviously I don't know if it is because of that but I know it looks crap.

I am onw aplying for another job and my mum said to just leave the job off , but surely they would find out when they got my p45 ??

Leave it out. The job is of no relevance to to your next job. It did not last long enogh and that employer woudl not be able to give you a sensible reference anyway.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 21/04/2009 18:58

Temp job? Work experience?

btw - if they are your last employer, chances are any prospective employer would want a ref from them - it's what they normally require - last employer and 1 (or more) others.

And if you got a job without declaring them, who knows how the new employer would view that?

Would they know from my p45 when and where i'd last worked then ??

Feel stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You know, I can't remember. It's been 5 years since I filled one in. I obv had to put my details and dates etc as employer, but a p45 has 3 (is it?) copies and I can't remember which details transfered onto the copy you give to the new employer.

NervousNutty · 21/04/2009 19:20

I haven't actually got my p45 either.

I thought it best to be honest on the last form I did but can see that it would have still not looked good and probably contributed to me not getting an interview.

??? I have never had to give a P45 to a new employer.

KatyMac · 21/04/2009 20:33

If it was before 6th April this year your P45 won't be relevant anyway

Say temporary work between XXX & YYYY

notsoclever · 21/04/2009 20:37

If I were looking at an application with the details you describe, then I would wonder what was going on - either that you were desperate to leave your previous job, or that you didn't know what you wanted to do and would be likely to leave my company early.

So I agree with betadad - just leave it off your application. Then when you get an interview tell them you did some temporary work for 2 weeks.

Your last employer should have given you a P45 form when you left. Its main purpose is to show the tax details of your employment. You need to give this to any new employer (for tax purposes).

A new employer is likely to want references from significant previous employers. However if it is possible that they will want something from your 2 week employer just to verify that you did work for them.

NakedInnocence · 21/04/2009 20:39

I'd put as temp work as suggested by KatyMac.

If asked why I didn't put that company as a reference, I'd probably say something along the lines of thinking a company for whom I'd worked for longer would be more informative for the prospective employer - might be the wrong approach though!

Thanks all

Rang up about the job today and I have to send a cv in with a covering letter. I have left my cv exactly as it is for now and if offered an interview I might bring up the job then.

Apprently if I have no p45 i have to get a p46 for a new employer.
