Is it easier to negotiate more flexible hours if you contract?

Until begin made redundant a couple of months ago I worked in IT as a programmer. I worked 25 hours a week. My specific skill set is quite specialised and I don't want to spend too long each day commuting.

I had experience of seeking part time work in this sector 4 years ago, its not easy!

A job has been advertised this week which is a close match to my skill set but it is contract. As a contractor who dictates how many hours per week are worked and when they are worked? I am happy to work more hours but I would like to do school pickup 2 or 3 times a week and then put in the hours in the evening.

I guess every situation is different. If you get offered the job then you should tell them the times you would like to work. If you're fairly niche and they are keen enough to offer you a job then they will probably look favourably on it.

Are you taken on as a proper contractor ie you invoice for a fee monthly or as a temporary employee ie you're on the payroll?

My DH has been an IT contractor for many years & it differs from company to company. Some are quite flexible (especially if their permies work flexitime) other want strict 9-5 everyday.

Of course if you have a skill that's in short supply you have more bargaining power too than if that skill set is 10-a-penny ATM.

I'd apply & ask at interview, you've nothing to lose.
