Is this a really silly time to change jobs if you don't have to?

I've been with my current employer for 9 years and since having dc have been overtaken by other staff and really feel I have lost my role within the workplace. The place I work is very small, so no chance of changing positions where I am, so I am considering a change, but i'm nervous atm for obvious reasons!

I'm in accounts and am thinking of a change to work for NHS/local council, or maybe a school, as i'd like to slightly change direction if I find a suitable job.

I'm a bit wary of the 'last in first out' theory and don't know if I should hold tight for a while, but then should I really put life on hold 'just in case'

Last in first out is very outdated as a redundancy selection method, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. Redundancy these days is usually based on skills, experience, performance, disciplinary record, attendance record, all that stuff, rather than just looking at the calendar.

I'd be more concerned about the fact that you don't have many rights during the first year, that you won't be entitled to redundancy pay for two years, and even then it wouldn't be much compared to what you'd get now.

Having said that, working in the public sector will give you more job security than elsewhere at the moment tbh.
