Is it ok to apply for a full time role knowing you only want to work part time hours?

and then bring it up at interview that this is what you hope to do or is it a big no no

no why would you do that?

with the hope that job share might be an option? Just started applying for jobs after redundancy but all the good ones are full time which isn't an option for me atm - thought it was a bad idea

I'd call them and talk to them or put it on application form.

If you bring it up at interview they will feel like you have wasted their time and be v v unlikely to hire you (unless you are the most super-amazing candidate ever and no-one else can do the job!).

I would and have, i generally put in a covering letter saying so and also a bit of blarb of how fab i am and just half of me is better than none of me . I have appointed 2 part timers in the past to make a full time post and like wise have been appointed that way myself.

It is not OK to bring it up at interview. It is OK to ask by phone/on the application.

For example. We are recruiting for someone to cover a specific shift. The start and finish times are fixed for very specific business reasons. The days are not so a job share might be possible with some notice. If I wasted an hour of my time interviewing you for a FT role only for you to ask for less hours I would be really annoyed.

Given advance notice we could look at alternatives, other applicants might be looking for a job share etc. so we could match you up.

Not out of the blue though

Be positive abovetheclouds! Work out the hours they have advertised and what you can do sell yourself!

It is possible in some situations

I think it really depends on the nature of the job and how different the hours you want to work are compared to the hours they are advertising.

abovetheclouds is this the HR Admin job? If it's a 9-5 office job that's a bit different to a specific shift they need covered.

If you want to do 4 days, or full time hours compressed into 4 days or something, that's not very different. In that case I'd go to the interview and wow them, get them very interested in you, then approach the possibility of a small change then.

If you want to make a significant change to the hours, working 3 days or something, you are basically asking for a job share or for them to significantly rethink the job. In that case I think asking beforehand is the best way to go to avoid wasting everyone's time.

it also depends how crucial it is for you. If it's not a dealbreaker but would be a nice-to-have, then go to the interview and ask later. If the hours you want are an absolute must, then ask before.

I think in this climate they are likely to have lots of applicants so the incentive for them to consider alternatives to the hours they've specified is less. Working the hours they want for 6 months, getting good at the job, making your mark and learning all the ins and outs would make putting in a flexible working request at that stage more likely to be successful.

Hi flowerybeanbag - it's a different job this time - but it looks brilliant and I know I could do it but it's been advertised full time. I am going to give them a call on Tuesday and see if they would consider a job share. Thanks for all your help
