DH has to give up work, so what will happen to us?

my DH is a student, he is being forced to give up his job for a number of reasons, main one being working full time and studying full time isnt working and he is failing his course.

his work are refusing to fit his hours in making him miss one day a week at uni most weeks, so he has handed in his notice.

he finishes on the 6th, but what benefits are we entitled to, and when do i apply for them?

there is no information online about students and familys that i can find, im a little unsure if i should be on IS, or he should be on job seekers even tho he wouldnt be looking for work being a full time student..

help?

TIA

You would need to ring the benefits agency really - as he resigned he wouldn't be entitled to job seekers at first, and as he isn't actually looking for a job he wouldn't be entitled anyway. Would you be looking for a job? I don't know about IS I'm afraid.

He could try the uni - they have hardship funds and bursaries you can apply for in certain circumstances.

i wont be looking for work as will be heavily pregnant.
do you know who it is i have to speak to? is it jobcenter or another phone number?

If you're a student I don't think you get benefits, but you would I think IYSWIM because he is technically your dependent. Talk to student finance people and to CAB. I'm sure you can get something (definitely bursaries and he should be getting a children's grant too I think)

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 12:15

If his course is over 16hrs per week it is classed as Full-time Education and he would not be entitled to JSA...apart from the fact he left his job

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 12:16

how pregnant are you?

TheNatty · 24/03/2009 12:17

yeah its a full time course.

we ARE entitled to housing benifit i know that much because we get it now.
i know we will lose working tax tho.

no one seems to know because he is a student its not so clear cut

You will be entitled to IS once you are 11 weeks from confinement...have you recieved you MATB1 yet?

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 12:20

you will be entitled to CTC once the baby is born...you will also be entitled to the Sure Start Grant and Health in Pregnancy Grant too...

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 12:22

when did you partner start his course?

Peachy · 24/03/2009 12:22

Definitely speak to student finance, apart from the fct that they ahev the info I understand benefits agency ahve a several week backlog ATM so hardship grants etc may be what you need to survive for a bit.

As the others say, he won't get benefots but you and any children will.

We amy be in a similar place next year as DH likely to be amde redundant (the downside of being a specialist- handy to have easiest to ditch!) so looking at uni (I cannot work as am a carer).

Peachy · 24/03/2009 12:23

have a look here

My dh gave his job up last week, or possibly the week before my weeks are merging....

Anyway, you should be entiled to something. You fill in the bog-standard form but their is a section for Students. I think you will get Income Support or something.

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 12:32

You can also apply for a Crisis/Social Fund Loan if things get bad...check out www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

TheNatty · 24/03/2009 13:26

sorry forgot to put that we already have 2 children, this is our third we are due.
im 23 weeks so not got matb1 from midwife yet but can get it easily if needed.
we have a student loan installment due at the end of april which is why we have decided to take the plunge now, because was can live of that VERY carefully until benefits sorted out.

oh and he started his course sept 06, he failed several times and has retaken units, basically we have tried REALLY hard to keep going with working and studying but i had to stop work in 07 when my daughter was born because two children under 2 was too much money in full time childcare.

one option youmight have if he is still studying and you want to go back at somepoint is to claim childcare grant; helped us massively (I graduated last year)

However right now that's not feasible and AFAIK your dh may not have long left so that's just a consideration for the future IYSWIM

Look at surestart rants also: £500 for baby things.

HappyMummyOfOne · 24/03/2009 19:43

If he is in receipt of a student loan you wont get IS. JSA wont be relevant as he isn't looking for work and gave up a job so would have been sanctioned anyway.

You'll get tax credits and child benefit. HB is not normally paid for students who dont work but there are some exceptions to the rules - your local council website should be able to help with that.
