The world sucks atm

Candlewax · 11/03/2009 09:54

Well we get to hear at 1pm tomorrow that my husband has officially been made redundant. Apparently there may be something else he can apply for but all new terms and conditions and obviously, a huge drop in wages. There is only so much of a drop we can take. Looks like I shall be working 16 hours a day to keep us all afloat.

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 11/03/2009 09:54

It's just mad how quickly the economy has gone to shit.

LoveBeingAMummy · 12/03/2009 07:03

Thanks mumsnet!!! I thought it was a great idea to have aplace for us to discuss all redundancy type things as it is effecting so many of us.

Tech not sure about your choice of title

ABetaDad · 12/03/2009 07:21

If anyone is made redundant I strongly advise taking virtually any job even part time to get back to work rather than hanging out for the job, position, pay you used to have.

It is always far far easier to get work while in work than while sitting at home. The economy is in one hell of a mess and it is not going to better very quickly.

Also make sure you have your CV up to date on your computer at home at all times with a standard cover letter ready so you can send it off quick for every job you see.

I was made redundant 14 years ago and it was stil a shock even though I knew it was going to happen and it was voluntary with a good pay off.

Best of luck to all.

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/03/2009 08:05

Thanks betadad - good advice as always!

fuddlepuck · 17/03/2009 08:29

Redundancy is not about you not doing well, it is about your company and or industry sector not doing well.

Sad stressful times.

mummyharrison · 17/03/2009 12:21

Can anyone help please
I'm 21wks pregnant and in talks with my employer about voluntary redundancy. What sort of offer can I expect to receive? And would I still be entitled to claim Maternity Allowance if I was to leave voluntarily? I've worked for the same employer for over 8 years. Had 9 months mat leave in 2007/08 and returned part time last July. Thank you.

MrsFreud · 27/03/2009 20:46

sympathies candlewax...it doesn't feel great being the breadwinner does it??

how is your dh feeling?

thisweathersajoke · 01/04/2009 11:01

My poor husband was made redundant for the 3rd time in a year yesterday (catering!!).

He has a month left and we really don't know what to do now in terms of jobs - retraining is an option but with an 8 month old son we don't have much money and the stress can be overwhelming at times.

My maternity leave ends this month and i have a choice to go back for 30hrs to a job i loathe, or to a job offer i have which is 18hrs a week - which i would love??

what to do. I feel numb.

compo · 01/04/2009 11:03

I think i would go for the 18 hours job you would love
it might lead to more hours in the long run

fattiemumma · 01/04/2009 11:06

Dp was made redundant on friday. was all a biut sudden and he is obviously panicking.

had to go into our local council for someting unrelated yesterday and found some leaflets about mortgage relief. haven't been able to look into it properly yet but figured it may be of use to some of you the website is

here

thisweathersajoke · 01/04/2009 11:16

Thank you for your help fattie, we rent so can apply for housing benefit luckily.

Just don't know what to say to DH, he feels so awful, as if it is something that he has done wrong, letting us down etc.

Good luck with mortgsage relief, hope that it helps you x

fattiemumma · 01/04/2009 11:19

Dp is feeling very low too. its the second time he has been made redundant too. though thankfully not quite so close together.

it has hit his self esteem hard. no matter how many times i tell him it wasn't a personal decision he just feels like a failure.
its really hard for him.

thisweathersajoke · 01/04/2009 11:22

it is hard, in fact i do not know what to say to help!

my dh saaid that this time he took the news better - the first 2 times he was really upset and it was worse than this time - we wer kind of expecting it this time. Now we are just angry.

I have to sign off now but was nice chatting with you and good luck xx
