WWYD? Interesting work/good for CV but v poorly paid...long post!

I've been offered some freelance work - a great project, 6 months or so, from home, part-time and v flexible (it's writing and research). It's a new subject matter for me and I'm keen to diversify. It would look good on my CV and help enable me to move into a different area. The work would be straightforward but quite labour-intensive and I've little idea realistically of how long it will take me to complete. So far, so good.

The downside is the pay is very very feeble plus I have three DCs: oldest at school, middle at nursery and a 4 month old baby, still bf. I could probably get the bulk of the work done without extra childcare - while my oldest two are at nursery/school (I could increase DD2's nursery hours to 15-21 hours a week without additional cost as she's about to turn three) and while the baby naps. Holidays would obviously be more tricky but we would have some help from family plus DH has a lot of holiday to take.
I have worked from home before when DD2 was a small baby and found I could do so reasonalbly successfully when they are v small and still nap a lot but it's v difficult once they start walking etc.

So I won't make much but it won't cost me either - therefore, is it worth all the hassle more or less just for CV points? I do enjoy my work but how realistic is it to take on this project with three DCs under 5?!

Thanks for any advice

The first paragraph of your post sounds like you are enthusiastic about this work, so I guess it depends on whether it motivates you enough to deal with the inevitable hassle.

Personally, I would go for it, but then I am always more motivated by an external deadline than I am by full-time child interaction. And I truly believe that for me, having stimulating work made me a more tolerant and interested Mum.

There will be times when it's all too much and you will feel overwhelmed, but at least then you will have a choice about giving up the work or re-negotiating the timescale.
