Does anyone know of any decent recruitment agencies?

DH has been made redundant and is actively looking for a new job.

We're not sure who he should get in touch with, colleagues of his have said that there are a few agencies out there who aren't very good and hound you with info not suitable to you.

He worked in the IT sales industry.

is he looking to remain within the same industry? He may stand a better chance applying to companies directly as apparently the recruitment agencies have loads of candidates and no jobs at the moment.

HeinzSight · 23/02/2009 13:12

Yes, he wants to stay within the same industry. I did wonder whether that was the better option, ie applying direct. It's a scary time for us just now, we're expecting another baby in Aug just to add to the stress!

You've nothing to lose by registering with as many as you can find but see it as an additional way of finding work rather than the only way.

I got some really good CV advice from a couple I signed up with - I'd been out of the job market for 10 years so really needed it.

I thought that Hays were good (though looking for IT marketing rathr than sales) in terms of sending me jobs which fitted my profile. I didn't like Michael Page much (felt that they were only interested in people with blue chip experience)

Rindercella · 23/02/2009 13:45

Really sorry to hear about your DH - it is a crap time at the moment and it must be very worrying for you. My DH is in the same industry, and it's all looking very shaky atm.

I think your DH needs to be careful who he sends his CV to, tbh. There are some agencies who advertise positions that simply do not exist to collate CVs in order to demonstrate to companies the calibre of candidates they have.

There are some good people out there thouh. CAT me, I may have a useful contact for you.

Iklboo · 23/02/2009 13:47

I out my CV on Monster (before hacking issue) and the agencies came to me. I vetted them carefully and if they sent more than obe unsuitable vacancy I deregistered. I ended up with my present job which is a 100% salary increase on my old job (which was, admittedly very very very crap)

HeinzSight · 23/02/2009 19:26

Thanks for your posts. Rindercella, I've CATed you

Heinzsight, I have recently set up a recruitment business (completely different sector) and I would warn your DH against posting his CV on a jobs site. We're finding that a lot of recruitment agencies are very much feeling the strain and just posting CV's out to potential clients, without even speaking to the candidates and thereby jeopardising the candidates chances of finding a job.
DH is in IT, I know he rates Senitor recruitment, though he is in a different area of IT.
He is better to pick no more than 2 consultancies so that he doesn't get duplication (and keep a note of where his CV has gone to).

Hope your DH gets the right job soon

HeinzSight · 23/02/2009 19:35

Thanks Lizzylou that's really helpful

Thats OK, I do hope that he finds something soon, we are finding that things are picking up slowly but surely (Legal recruitment) trust me to get back into it during a recession!
He just needs to make sure he is in control and knows where his CV is going, he'll be fine, am sure.

HeinzSight · 23/02/2009 19:40

Thanks for your reassuring words Lizzylou. I think it must be incredibly daunting for him, this is completely alien territory and it's so hard to know where to even start. He knows a fair few people in the industry so we're hoping and praying that something comes up through someone he knows.

I'm keeping everything crossed, even my eyes!!!!!!

OP posts:
waitingforgodot · 23/02/2009 19:46

Make sure his CV looks fantastic!

HeinzSight · 23/02/2009 19:48

He's worked really hard on it, forwarded it to his (v clever) sister for approval etc. Is there anything else he can do to make sure it's right?

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 23/02/2009 19:52

He definitely needs to work his contacts, firms would prefer not to have to pay agency fees (gawdnamnit!)so if he could get something through word of mouth, that would be better for him.
If his CV is looking good, he gets in touch with 2 good agencies as well as networking, next step is interview prep. I have info on interview technique, it's fairly general and not that specific to legal, could be of use to him?
I haven't got CAT tho. Let me know when you need it!

bigspender30 · 23/02/2009 20:02

I write professional CVs for a living. I dont mind if you want me to cast my eye over it and I can give you some honest feedback. You can CAT me .
If its any consolation, you are not alone. My DH has been made redundant and has had a few interviews but no job yet. Need to persevere though!

HeinzSight · 24/02/2009 10:53

Hi, BMS Sales are good, Rilwood Associates are quite small but can come up trumps. I've used both and was happy with them.
Best of luck to your husband.

Rindercella · 25/02/2009 18:15

Hi Heinz, I did respond to your CAT yesterday - hope you received it ok?

HeinzSight · 25/02/2009 20:33

Rindercella, yes I did, thank you so much for that, I passed on the details to DH. Really really appreciate it

bigspender30 · 26/02/2009 11:33

Hi Heinz, have emailed you x

HeinzSight · 26/02/2009 12:55

Just read it, you are a BRILLIANT LOVELY WOMAN you are, thank you SOOOOOOOOO much, fantastic suggestions, will make those changes.

So, then, do you think he sounds good??? I'd employ him! We're still a bit that his employer let him go, he was doing SO well there. Their loss!

OP posts:
bigspender30 · 26/02/2009 13:56

You are welcome! I would have changed it myself however was a bit pushed for time. Hope it makes sense. He looks really employable.

HeinzSight · 26/02/2009 15:57

We'll keep you posted.
